Year in Review: Our Favorite Anime, Moments & More From 2025

Another year, another round of amazing anime to reflect on before getting ready for what 2026 has to offer . 2025’s anime lineup was full of binge-worthy options, bringing back familiar titles, introducing us to new ones, and even concluding some pretty noteworthy series. We here at Crunchyroll News had a lot (like, a LOT ) of anime that we called our favorites. Curious to see what we watched and loved? Check out our favorite anime of 2025! Apocalypse Hotel , at its best, was completely unpredictable. Any one episode could be hilarious, action-packed, melancholy or deeply affecting. The only guarantee would be that director Kana Shundo and her crew at CygamesPictures would swing the bat as hard as they could, and their hit rate was as high as you'd hope." – Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer Call of the Night Season 2 Image via HIDIVE “It’s been over a decade since I started watching seasonals on a dedicated basis. My watchlist in recent years has largely become keeping up with popular franchises and interesting new titles such as My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON and TO BE HERO X and supplementing them with a smattering of roms, coms and rom-coms like OKITSURA: Fell in Love with an Okinawan Girl, but I Just Wish I Know What She's Saying and mono — that’s the long and short of it, at least. The other selection trend I have is not having a Crunchyroll streaming title as my favorite anime of the year, and well… I’m doing it again with Call of the Night . Back amongst the neon-drenched streets and immersive soundscape that made the first season feel like a dream, the mischievous interplay between Nazuna and Ko went to another level as they navigated poignant origins, confusing emotions and a crafty girl failure villain in Season 2, giving me everything I could possibly want from the aforementioned smattering. We also learn more about Kotoyama’s unique take on vampires, which I think is an under-discussed quality of the series. I went on to read the now-completed manga afterward, and crikey… it’s going to absolutely ruin me if they adapt the story to the end." – Liam Dempsey, Sr. EN Editorial Producer Honorable Mentions Nicholas Friedman, Publisher, Crunchyroll News Neely Battle, Associate Social Media Manager, eCommerce DAN DA DAN Season 2 RELATED: 10 Supernatural Anime That Highlight How Unique the Genre Is “As an avid DAN DA DAN manga reader, this season had a lot of moments that I've been eagerly waiting for. From the exorcism scene, fighting a kaiju, and the cliffhanger, it was all great and exactly what I was hoping for. We also got to see the characters become much more of a tight-knit group, and it'll always be fun to see these silly kids continue to be silly." – Jared Clemons , Contributing Writer Season 2 of DAN DA DAN brings even more of the chaos and charm that made the first season such a delight, adding more characters and expanding on existing characters and relationships. DAN DA DAN is the sort of show where every second of every episode is entertaining, especially when you have no idea what genre it'll be next." – Skyler Allen, Contributing Writer Science SARU did a little miracle with the adaptation of DAN DA DAN . They made an action, sentimental, comical, bizarre, occult, sci-fi anime unique in its genre. At the end of each episode, my friends and I used to speak to each other about it the same way we did decades ago before streaming services. DAN DA DAN is a very modern series, but at the same time, it gives you vintage vibes that bring shivers, tears and laughs." – Francesco Ventura , Italian Editor of Crunchyroll News Honorable Mentions Tatiana Tacca, Influencer Lead Nicholas Friedman, Publisher, Crunchyroll News Annie M., Contributing Writer Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera, Spanish News Editor Julio Velez, Spanish Editor for Crunchyroll News Digimon Beatbreak RELATED: Digimon Series Watch Order (Including Movies) “My favorite anime of 2025 is Digimon Beatbreak . I've loved the Digimon franchise since I was little and have always been invested in it, even as the popularity behind it would get eclipsed by other franchises over the years. With Digimon Beatbreak , Digimon had a unique opportunity in its long run to do something new with the series, and Toei ran with it. What we've been given thus far is a gorgeously animated, stylish, and emotional new Digimon anime that is so unafraid to take things in new directions and do so with a splash." – Callie Cadorniga , Contributing Writer Honorable Mentions Nicholas Friedman, Publisher, Crunchyroll News Dr. STONE SCIENCE FUTURE RELATED: How to Watch Dr. STONE in Order “ Dr. STONE because it's already one of my favorite anime and I watched it with my kids as it was airing." – Carolyn Burke , EN Features Editor Honorable Mentions Nicholas Friedman, Publisher, Crunchyroll News Gachiakuta “This anime snuck up on me. I hadn’t looked up too much of anything about it, and now I’m so, so deep in the rabbit hole. I have a real soft spot for anime series where something means more than it seems to mean. The whole idea behind what is and isn’t trash, how finding worth in said trash can yield wondrous results and, of course, found family dynamics made me an instant fan. Not to mention how the series keeps going in the exact opposite direction that I expect it to, leading to some pretty meaningful moments that I really took to heart (looking at you Zanka, my mediocre king). Gachiakuta also knows how to deliver its more unsettling topics. That animation style switch for Amo’s backstory will stick with me for a long while. There’s also the community reaction, particularly the Black anime community. Seeing how Black fans have locked in, celebrating the characters, the style, and the music, y’all, the musiiiiiic! It’s been such a joyous thing to see as the series progressed. There’s not much else left for me to say besides zun zun, zun zun… AYE! " – Briana Lawrence , Sr. EN Features Editor RELATED: Basic Doesn’t Back Down: A Thank You Letter to Gachiakuta's Zanka Nijiku " Gachiakuta hits every note that's needed for a successful shonen – the themes of overcoming the odds through the power of friendship and pure willpower. Then we have a unique setting of a world that's built entirely around what people consider to be trash. The fights are cinematic, and the music is good enough to enjoy on its own." – Keith Reid-Cleveland , Contributing Writer Honorable Mentions Mohamed MIR, French Editor Nicholas Friedman, Publisher, Crunchyroll News Deanna Nguyen, Sr. Contributing Writer May I Ask for One Final Thing? The series is full of heart and wholesome moments without shying away from the realistic aspects of being a young person who is into cosplay in modern-day Tokyo. I personally loved the little details that went into making the world feel real, such as the cosplay events that you can attend in real life, how to hire a cosplay studio and the awkward aspects of walking through a Don Quijote." – Daryl Harding , Senior Japanese Correspondent Honorable Mentions Adam Wescott, Contributing Writer Nicholas Friedman, Publisher, Crunchyroll News Haley Whisennand, Sr. Manager, Global Social Media Strategy Liam Dempsey, Sr. EN Editorial Producer Jared Clemons, Contributing Writer My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON RELATED: 40 My Hero Academia Quotes Worth Remembering “ My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON was my favorite anime of the year. Watching the conclusion of one of my favorite anime of all-time turned into must-see programming, I’m talking 'Everyone out of the room, I need 23 minutes to watch this!' The characters that I’ve watched mature and evolve over the better part of a decade, watching them become better human beings, and of course getting a front row seat to the action, was one of the best experiences I’ve had watching anime this year." – Jameel Raeburn , Contributing Writer Honorable Mentions Briana Lawrence, Sr. EN Features Editor My Hero Academia: Vigilantes RELATED: My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Is The Perfect Gateway to the Franchise “It's always interesting to see underdog stories, especially from a smaller scope and more urban scenario like My Hero Academia: Vigilantes . The main trio is full of charisma. Despite all their flaws, they give their best for their community, even if they’re not officially licensed heroes. The fact that each one has a different backstory and perspective in life (one is a university student, another is a high school student street performer, and the last one is a bulky middle-aged father) makes them relatable to the public of different ages. Their problems may not be world-shattering like the main My Hero Academia series, but their problems are real and mean the world to these characters, and you start to cheer for them." – Samir Fraiha , Senior Portuguese Contributing Writer Honorable Mentions Mohamed MIR, French Editor Jared Clemons, Contributing Writer Secrets of the Silent Witch “Overpowered MCs feel like they're a dime a dozen at this point, but what makes Monica such a fun and unique overpowered MC is that she's one of the most socially anxious people to exist. She'd rather sit tucked away in a cabin and work on math formulas than be out among the people. But she has responsibilities as one of the Seven Sages, and that sends her back to school on an undercover job that has her learning and growing just as much as any other student. It's also ridiculously fun to see her reactions to everything, especially when teachers or fellow students praise the "Silent Witch" right in front of her without knowing who they're talking to. (Also, Junichi Suwabe is one of the seiyuu in this series, so automatic bonus points for me!)" – Haley Whisennand , Sr. Manager, Global Social Media Strategy Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- RELATED: Solo Leveling Season 2 Recap: Everything You Need to Know “This was a really great year for anime, and I loved so many shows almost at the same level as Solo Leveling , but I gotta stay true to myself. As a manhwa and novel reader, it was so much fun seeing the anime-only crowd reacting to every new development during the season, and their hype growing just like mine did when reading it for the first time. I'm the biggest advocate for this show on the team, and I'm the one more eagerly awaiting a new season." – Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera , Spanish News Editor Honorable Mentions Mohamed MIR, French Editor Takopi's Original Sin “I know this is a very sad story, but the catharsis it achieves in these difficult times is extraordinary, and so are its life lessons. It's an impeccable adaptation of the manga, and the animation by Enishiya studios is sublime, not to mention the voice acting, the opening and ending themes, and the endearing score." – Julio Velez , Spanish Editor for Crunchyroll News Honorable Mentions Annie M., Contributing Writer Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera, Spanish News Editor The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 RELATED: The Characters of The Apothecary Diaries “What else is there to say? For two years in a row, the life of Maomao has utterly captivated me, from ongoing investigations and experimentations to the incredible chemistry with Jinshi and a conspiracy plot that takes your breath away by the end. I could watch this series for 100 seasons." – Nicholas Friedman, Publisher , Crunchyroll News NOTE: This is also the favorite anime of 2025 for Tatiana Tacca, Influencer Lead. Honorable Mentions Haley Whisennand, Sr. Manager, Global Social Media Strategy Keith Reid-Cleveland, Contributing Writer Annie M, Contributing Writer Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera, Spanish News Editor Francesco Ventura, Italian Editor of Crunchyroll News The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Image via Netflix “Arguably one of the best romance series in anime’s history, CloverWorks delivered doki-doki moments week after week, without compromising on the characterization of the entire cast. I was impressed by how faithfully the anime adapted the manga, and I am so thankful that it did the series justice. As someone who has often been judged negatively by others based on my appearance, Rintaro’s story of being ostracized hit pretty close to home. When you’re met with constant berating since childhood, it becomes easy to give up on everything, including other people’s perceptions of you. You stop wanting things. You stop trying. You start to blame yourself for everything and apologize constantly just for existing. So when someone makes an effort to see and appreciate you for who you really are, you can be left feeling confused and awkward, but most of all, grateful. The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity isn’t just peak romance; it’s peak coming-of-age on how to navigate a world that rejects you and how genuine connections with others can make life meaningful." – Annie M , Contributing Writer Honorable Mentions Nicholas Friedman, Publisher, Crunchyroll News Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera, Spanish News Editor Neely Battle, Associate Social Media Manager, eCommerce “If you’re looking for a sweet romance, this title is for you. The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity can be likened to a modern-day Romeo & Juliet, where two students from different schools — initially with poor opinions of one another — grow closer, and their friends begin to understand each other better. What stands out to me the most about this story isn’t just the romance, but the way the characters evolve and become better versions of themselves — for their friends, and especially for the person they care about most. The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity demonstrates the depth of human connections and how these bonds help people grow, both individually and together." – Cary Cruz , Graphic Designer The Summer Hikaru Died Image via Netflix “This series is a masterpiece that blends horror and mystery and keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what's next for Yoshiki and Hikaru. The anime was beautifully done, from the animation to the stellar voice acting. It truly did the manga justice. Not to mention, I've been listening to the opening and ending songs a LOT. The Summer Hikaru Died is truly one you don't want to miss." – Neely Battle , Associate Social Media Manager, eCommerce RELATED: Why The Summer Hikaru Died is a Compelling Read for Pride Month “This was one of the anime series I was looking forward to the most this year and it did not disappoint. I’ve been reading the manga, and I feel like this anime is the perfect example of how the medium can enhance what we see on the page. Seeing certain scenes in motion and hearing the voice actors bring these characters to life takes this story to another level. It’s also an excellent example of how the horror genre is capable of telling these powerful, relatable, coming-of-age stories that delve into things like grief, love and trying to figure out who you are, where you belong, and if it's worth trying to fit into a place where it feels like you can’t be yourself." – Briana Lawrence , Sr. EN Features Editor WIND BREAKER Season 2 RELATED: A Comprehensive Guide to the Wind Breaker Fights (So Far) “I love a good delinquent anime, and WIND BREAKER is one that really captures the magic of this kind of story. The camaraderie between these characters and the unapologetic acceptance they have for each other is so heartwarming, which may not be what you expect in a series with so many intense fight scenes. Seeing how everyone welcomes Sakura into the group, and seeing him slowly start to open up to them, is so, so good, not to mention meeting Tsubakino and seeing him shine." – Briana Lawrence , Sr. EN Features Editor Honorable Mentions Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera, Spanish News Editor Yano-kun's Ordinary Days “I'm going to have to look in the thesaurus for all the ways to say "wholesome" when I talk about this series. The leads are adorable, their friends are just as sweet, and I have never seen a couple in anime so directly honest and communicative about their feelings. I hope his ordinary days don't end any time soon!" – Kelly Knox , Sr. Contributing Writer/Cozy Anime Corner Columnist Honorable Mentions Liam Dempsey, Sr. EN Editorial Producer Skyler Allen, Contributing Writer ZENSHU “I didn't catch it when it first premiered at the beginning of this year, but I binge-watched it recently, and I'm so glad I did. It's an original anime by MAPPA, which saddens me because there isn't any source material to continue where it left off, and I pray it gets another season. I love that it's not your typical isekai. It's about rediscovering the reason why you love what you do, despite encountering harsh truths in fiction and reality. The animation is spectacular and meta since the protagonist is an animation director who can animate key frames at an inhuman speed. Whatever she draws comes to life, and I love that there are different animation styles. Highly underrated show!" – Deanna Nguyen , Sr. Contributing Writer RELATED: If You've Ever Written Fanfic, ZENSHU is For You Honorable Mentions Adam Wescott, Contributing Writer Briana Lawrence, Sr. EN Features Editor Crunchyroll News Favorite Anime Moments of 2025 Apocalypse Hotel RELATED: I Felt Alive — Why Episode 11 of Apocalypse Hotel May Just Be the Best of the Spring Anime Season “Episode 8 of Apocalypse Hotel had one of the greatest mecha battles that I've seen in the last couple of years, which is wild when you realize that the show was normally a chill, sci-fi, slice-of-life type show. Seeing this awesome battle while one of the characters yells at the other about how important they are and how much they were missed was such a refreshing (and epic) change of pace for the series." – Haley Whisennand , Sr. Manager, Global Social Media Strategy " Apocalypse Hotel ’s ninth episode and its wedding/funeral is my pick for the saddest, funniest and most life-affirming scene this year." – Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc RELATED: The Reze Dance: Chainsaw Man's Viral Hit is Pure Escapism “The pool scene in Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc was one of the most moving anime scenes of the year. The direction, the composition, the emotion, the music and the thematic motifs of the spider trapping the fly was utter perfect. I was captivated watching the moment on the big screen. For just one moment, I believed Denji and Reze could be together forever." – Daryl Harding , Senior Japanese Correspondent " There are so many moments that led to me going to see this movie twice, but Aki actually grabbing onto Angel and him admitting that no, he doesn’t want to die, but he doesn’t want to watch anyone else die, either, is probably my favorite moment in the film. How you can have something that meaningful in a film that also has a chainsaw guy riding a shark like a horse truly illustrates how creative anime can be." – Briana Lawrence , Sr. EN Features Editor CITY THE ANIMATION Image via Prime Video “How long is a moment, really? At a chonky 11 minutes and 40 seconds, CITY THE ANIMATION boasts the most ambitious anime moment in terms of complexity, and executes it with such excellence that it left me speechless. In the fifth episode, we see moving collages of multiple threads of characters living their everyday lives and absurd antics, which eventually coalesce into a single brilliant moment. It shows that just like its residents, the city is fully alive. It moves; it breathes. And in the end, it is a story of distilled whimsy where you never know what’s going to happen next. – Annie M , Contributing Writer " CITY THE ANIMATION' s outrageous splitscreen flex." – Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer DAN DA DAN Season 2 “That AWESOME cliffhanger in DAN DA DAN Season 2." – Julio Velez , Spanish Editor for Crunchyroll News RELATED: 15 Pink-Haired Anime Characters to Brighten Your Day “The moment when Momo thinks she’s lost Okarun after the volcano erupts, and their reunion afterwards. Her manic desperation to save the person she cares for, her refusal to accept their end, her regret that she might not have made it there in time — to the extent where she pulls apart freshly cooled/hardened magma with her bare hands — resonated with me deeply as someone who has wanted to save a loved one more than anything else. The accidental hug turned intentional embrace had me in a flood of feels. He was still alive; he was safe. It was a moment full of authentic awkwardness characteristic of teenagers navigating their emotions, yet still maintained the very raw tenderness and nuance that comes with intense relief." – Annie M , Contributing Writer Dr. STONE SCIENCE FUTURE “Everyone being shot up in Dr. STONE . When they ask how he learned to do the makeup, Gojo momentarily freezes, recalling a painful memory of his childhood friend insulting him for his passion. However, the moment quickly shifts as Marin's friends mention how other guys they know are also skilled at makeup, with glowing compliments about Gojo's talent. These positive remarks stand in stark contrast to the hurtful comments from his past, and suddenly, the dark mental scene that had overshadowed him starts to brighten This scene is my favorite because it highlights the journey of someone who was once too traumatized to share their passion, finally finding a space where they don't have to feel ashamed. For the first time, Gojo doesn’t have to hide who he is, not just with Marin but with her friends as well. It beautifully illustrates the power of surrounding yourself with the right people — people who lift you up — so you can embrace who you are and the things you love, without fear or shame. – Cary Cruz , Graphic Designer My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON RELATED: 15 Anime Like My Hero Academia That Go Beyond “Bakugo battling All For One was very cathartic. Watching his maturation with the series, being the one to save All Might after the guilt of being the one who made him lose his powers, and the will and tenacity to win by any means. He fully evolved into a legend after that." – Jameel Raeburn , Contributing Writer " This is gonna sound weird, but seeing fans react to this season has been my favorite thing. I read the manga, so I knew what was coming, but seeing fans share how they feel about the series, and even talk about how they were teenagers (like Class 1-A) who were now adults (like at the end of the series), really made me realize that there’s a generation of anime fans who literally grew up with this series. That’s really cool." – Briana Lawrence , Sr. EN Features Editor ONE PIECE RELATED: Anime Like One Piece on Crunchyroll “Bonney tearfully declaring that she's going to live because her parents loved her ( ONE PIECE episode 1152).
