‘Woken’ – Robert Englund Recommends This Under-the-Radar New Indie Horror Movie

With so many new horror movies being released in theaters and at home on a weekly basis – that number often reaches TEN brand new ones in any given week – it’s become pretty much impossible to keep up with it all. That’s particularly true of the indie horror movies being added to VOD services on a daily basis, which have a tendency to slip through the cracks completely.

That’s why it’s always helpful when respected names in the horror field chime in with their personal recommendations, which is something you’ll often find Stephen King doing. Another master of horror who will take the time to recommend recent watches is Robert Englund, who is of course the legendary face behind Freddy Krueger and so many of our nightmares.

Englund has taken to social media this week to recommend Woken, an under-the-radar Irish horror movie that just debuted on VOD outlets here in the States a couple weeks back.

Woken slipped through the cracks,” horror icon Robert Englund accurately notes in a post on Instagram this week. “Surprises, new faces and terrific acting. So original!”

The Irish horror film Woken marks the feature debut of director Alan Friel, director of the 2017 short Cake. Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Green Knight) stars alongside Maxine Peake (“Rules of the Game”) in the film, “set on a remote island in the North Sea.”

Woken is “set against a post-apocalyptic scenario in which the isle provides a safe haven from a pandemic that has decimated earth. The pic sees the protagonist Anna (Erin Kellyman) wake up pregnant and unable to remember who her husband is. Nor does Anna recognize Helen and Peter who are supposedly helping her get her health back.

“Disbelief in what she is being told leads to a horrible revelation and Anna having to contend with existential issues brought on by man’s destruction of the planet.”

You can rent Woken on VOD outlets including Amazon for $6.99 today.
