There’s “some Scooby-Doo shit going on” in the trailer for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the murder-mystery opens in select theaters on November 26 before streaming on Netflix December 12.
Daniel Craig is back on the case as Benoit Blanc, incapable of not solving a crime — even a perfectly impossible one like this.
Josh O’Connor (Challengers), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Mila Kunis (Black Swan), Jeremy Renner (The Avengers), Kerry Washington (Django Unchained), Andrew Scott (“Sherlock”), Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Daryl McCormack (Twisters), and Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3) also star.
The whodunnit concerns the unraveling of an upstate New York parish when one of their own inexplicably dies before their eyes.
When boxer-turned-priest Jud Duplenticy (O’Connor) is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Brolin), it’s clear that the congregation is in dire straits. After a seemingly impossible murder shocks the town, local police chief Geraldine Scott (Kunis) seeks the services of renowned detective Blanc (Craig) to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.
Johnson, who calls Wake Up Dead Man “the hardest script I have ever had to write,” produces alongside Ram Bergman through their T-Street Productions.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of TIFF, “It’s clear that everyone involved in these films is having an absolute blast, and it remains as infectious as ever, even as Johnson edges closer to darkness with this gothic whodunnit.”
The original Knives Out was released in 2019, followed by Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in 2022. Both screenplays earned Academy Award nominations.
