2007’s Teeth helped popularize the ancient concept of vagina dentata. Now female filmmakers are tackling the toothed vagina trope with Candy.
The feature is currently in development with Jessica Michael Davis directing from a script she co-wrote with Mindy McGinnis, based on McGinnis’ short story Vagina Dentata.
The darkly funny, feminist horror story follows a young woman who elects to have retractable teeth implanted in her vagina.
What begins as an act of self-defense quickly spirals into a hunger for power, as she embraces her alter ego, Candy — an avenging angel — whose thirst for control blurs the line between empowerment and obsession, leaving a trail of blood in her wake.
Davis previously adapted McGinnis’ short story into the short film Betty Bites Back, which premiered at Cinequest last year and went on to win the M. Night Shyamalan Award for Best Twist at LA Under the Stars.
McGinnis’s short story was published in the 2019 collection Betty Bites Back: Stories to Scare the Patriarchy.
