A sequel to 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona, titled The Revenge of La Llorona, is finally underway as production began this week in New York.
THR reports that Jay Hernandez (Hostel), Monica Raymund, Edy Ganem (9-1-1), Martín Fajardo (Griselda), Acston Luca Porto (Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado), and Avie Porto (Bob Hearts Abishola) join returning actor Raymond Cruz (“Breaking Bad”, Alien: Resurrection), as curandero Rafael Olvera, for the sequel.
The story sees the return of the vengeful spirit La Llorona, forcing a fractured family to confront their past and join forces with their estranged grandfather to battle ancient evils and stop the Weeping Woman before she claims their children forever.
Taking the directorial reins from The Curse of La Llorona’s Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Last Rites) for Revenge is filmmaker Santiago Menghini, who made his feature debut with 2021 horror movie No One Gets Out Alive.
James Wan, Gary Dauberman, and Emile Gladstone are also back among the producing team.
Sean Tretta, who is working with Wan on the filmmaker’s Creature from the Black Lagoon feature at Universal, wrote the script for The Revenge of La Llorona.
The Curse of La Llorona was a surprise breakout hit when it released in 2019, grossing $123 million worldwide despite a lackluster critical reception. That’s of note as this sequel was shelved multiple times, even as recently as early 2024. THR’s sources speculate that the massive success of Final Destination Bloodlines may have instilled confidence in horror sequels’ ability to perform with audiences.
The original film took place in 1973 Los Angeles, and followed Anna Tate-Garcia (Linda Cardellini), a social worker and widowed single mom struggling to balance the two roles while still coping with the loss of her husband. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, she and her own kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.
