The Mothers and Machines of ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ [The Lady Killers Podcast]

“But everything she said was true. She knew… and nobody believed her. Not even me.”

Mothers come in all shapes and sizes. From apron-wearing nurturers who bake cookies in pristine kitchens to fierce protectors with tough outer shells, there’s no one version of the perfect mother and an endless number of ways to raise a child. James Cameron’s Terminator 2 may be a jaw-dropping celebration of special effects and action, but within this bombastic story lies a non-traditional nuclear family centered around the protection of its youngest member.

More than a decade after defeating the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent back in time to kill her, Sarah (Linda Hamilton) is confined to a mental institution/supermax prison while her son John (Edward Furlong) careens around the streets of LA. But the T1000 (Robert Patrick), a more advanced model, has been sent back in time to assassinate the future military leader, sparking a brutal showdown between two ferocious machines. In order to protect her son, Sarah must partner with her worst nightmare, the T800 who once tried to ruin her life.

In the latest episode of The Lady Killers, co-hosts Jenn Adams and Sammie Kuykendall are joined by special guest Rachel Reeves to talk about the mothers and machines in this exceptional film. What do we make of Sarah’s transformation? Why does she struggle to connect with her son? Do we consider Janelle a lady killer and can AI effectively raise a child? They’ll quote the film’s iconic lines, dig into additions in the extended cut, and explore the many reasons girls love the action genre.
