‘The Last House on the Left’ Remake Director’s ‘Buzzheart’ Acquired by Dark Star Pictures

Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American rights to Buzzheart, the latest from writer-director Dennis Iliadis (The Last House on the Left 2009), Variety reports.

Set in Iliadis’ native Greece in the 1990s, the psychological thriller stars Evelina Papoulia, Giorgos Liantos, Konstantina Messini, and Claudio Kaya.

In the film, two parents driven by deep concern for their fragile daughter subject her boyfriend to shockingly intense and brutal tests, pushing the boundaries of his love to its absolute limits.

“I wanted to use all the elements I’ve learned in my American films which, in the end, were getting a bit too ‘standard horrorish’ and do something ideally more deep and human,” Iliadis told Eye for Film. “Usually you have people pretending they are normal and they turn out to be weird but here the people are weird and you discover their humanity at the very end.”

Produced by Greece’s Panoply Films and Neda Films with U.S-based Twin7, Buzzheart premiered in main competition at last year’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

The film will be released in France by B-Rated International; in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland by Busch Media; in Brazil by Belas Arte Group; and in Spanish-speaking Latin America by Dexterity Entertainment.
