With your eyes, you enter the world. With your ears, the world enters you in the sound-driven psychological folk horror movie Rabbit Trap.
Magnet Home Entertainment is bringing Rabbit Trap home to Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand on December 9.
Dev Patel (Monkey Man, The Green Knight), Rosy McEwen (Apartment 7A), and Jade Croot (“The Witcher”) star.
In the film, “Darcy (Patel) and Daphne (McEwen) Davenport are freshly decamped from London and taking up residence in an isolated cottage deep in the Welsh countryside in search of creative renewal and acoustic inspiration. When the couple set about exploring their new environs, recording instruments in tow, Darcy stumbles upon a ‘faerie circle’ that emits a strange, unidentifiable frequency; this odd discovery is followed closely by the appearance of an otherworldly child (Croot) who claims to live nearby and is eager to befriend the Davenports.
“Soon the child becomes a fixture in their household, alternately ingratiating himself and raising suspicions, and exposing unacknowledged rifts and unexamined secrets that threaten to wreak psychological and spiritual havoc in the lives of his makeshift adoptive parents.”
Writer-director Bryn Chainey makes his feature debut with the film, which premiered in the Midnight section at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. SpectreVision (Mandy, Color Out of Space) produces.
It’s a film that favors stunning cinematography and immersive sound design, but this faerie tale favors atmospherics over storytelling. I wrote in my review out of Sundance, “There’s no question that Chainey is a talented filmmaker, but Rabbit Trap gets so caught up in the stunning, poetic details that the larger picture becomes inscrutable and ineffective.”
