Sarah Michelle Gellar Says ‘Buffy’ Reboot Will Balance New & Legacy Storylines

Hulu is bringing the iconic series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” back to the small screen, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising the role of Buffy alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Firestarter) as a brand new vampire slayer. The reboot series is the brainchild of Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), and Michelle Gellar offers a few teases in a new chat with Vanity Fair this week.

For starters, Buffy isn’t the only character from the original ’90s series making a return.

It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original,” Sarah Michelle Gellar tells the outlet. “We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”

You can also expect the new series to tackle the issues plaguing today’s teens.

“One of the surprising aspects of Buffy is that it’s always been a crossover series,” the actress continues. “We’re trying to figure out how to modernize the themes of the series, especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media. What we want to explore are the space-time boundaries that affect society today.”

Michelle Gellar also notes, “I didn’t want to reintroduce something we had already seen. I waited for the right time to come.” That right time is now, with filming getting underway soon on the brand new “Buffy” television series. Stay tuned for updates as we learn more.

Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (“Poker Face”) wrote the pilot, and Chloé Zhao (Nomadlandis set to direct and executive produce. Sarah Michelle Gellar is also set to executive produce.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, becoming a pop culture icon in the process. It was followed by spinoff “Angel,” which ran from 1999 to 2004.
