Can two star-crossed lovers avoid getting smashed by a giant monster?
That’s the question posted by Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, the first in IDW Publishing’s four-issue line of oversized one-shot comics that drops the King of the Monsters into famous works of literature.
The series is branded under the Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents banner, spinning off from Tom Scioli‘s Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre limited series that debuted in 2024.
Written — in iambic pentameter! — by Adam Tierney with art by Sean Peacock, Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla reimagines Shakespeare’s tragedy on a kaiju scale, blending feuding families, budding romance, and large-scale destruction in Verona.
Each one-shot also includes a five-page backup story by Scioli. The debut issue finds Godzilla in Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood and the Monster of Nottingham.
“Tom Scioli has invented such a unique take on Godzilla. It’s an honor to play in that sandbox and also reimagine one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays,” said Tierney. “I can’t wait for everyone to see all the craziness we’ve come up with.”
“It’s such a treat to put my own spin on the King of the Monsters as well as one of The Bard’s most famous plays,” added Peacock, who teased “some really insane stuff in this book.”
Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla has four cover variants by Scioli, Peacock, and Elizabeth Beals, with the latter providing an homage to When Harry Met Sally.
It goes on sale April 8, with pre-orders due by March 2. The issue runs 52 pages and is priced at $7.99.
