Of course, the Resident Evil Requiem reveal at Summer Game Fest had everyone going crazy. And while the game is set to be playable at Gamescom later this year, several outlets such as GameSpot and IGN have managed to get a hands-on preview, detailing a few tidbits of info from their play sessions.
For starters, Requiem will be a meeting of the Resident Evil 7: biohazard first-person camera and the series’ traditional third-person camera. What this all means is that Requiem will allow players to swap between first-person and third-person perspectives through the Options menu at any point during gameplay. Not the most seamless, but hey, it’s still cool that Capcom is making the effort to give players a more immersive experience.
If you recall from the trailer, protagonist Grace Ashcroft awakens upside down, strapped to an examination table. The preview picks up from there, which has Grace navigating through a medical facility. In classic Survival Horror fashion, Grace’s only means of offense in this facility are makeshift weapons such as glass bottles.
In a callback to Code Veronica, Grace makes use of a lighter while making her way through the facility to light the more darker hallways. Of course, hiding in the darkness is the game’s big baddie a la Resident Evil 2‘s Mr. X: a bug-eyed lady that pursues Grace, looking to munch on her head.
According to Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi, the upcoming game will stay true to the series’ Survival Horror roots, but highlight “a kind of thrill” to the action. We’ll find out more (and hopefully even before that) once Gamescom rolls around in August.
Resident Evil Requiem will launch February 27 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series.
