Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Become Second-Highest Selling Games in Series

Nintendo has been on a roll this past month. With the announcement and pre-orders going up for the Nintendo Switch 2 and demand being high, the Kyoto-based games company is air-riding its way through the first quarter of its fiscal year. But that’s not to say Nintendo isn’t being cautious with its approach to its new console.  The Nintendo investor relations report for the fiscal year ending March 2025 was released through the company’s portal website yesterday, giving an insight into how Nintendo is going (Hint: quite well). Not only did they give projections about the Switch 2’s sales numbers, but they also updated game sales, with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet having the most impressive statistics. Since the release of Pokémon Red, Green and Blue , Generation One has always been the best-selling Pokémon game of all time. Following that was  Pokémon Gold and Silver , which held the second position since release until  Pokémon Sword and Shield  became  the first games in the series to overtake Generation 2 in 2022 .  Sword and Shield lost that coveted second-place spot this week as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have sold, as of March 31, 2025, 26.79 million copies. This is compared to Sword and Shield ’s 26.72 million copies sold. This is the first time in series history that a second generation on the same console has outsold the previous one. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are also going to receive a Nintendo Switch 2 free update , which may increase its sales further. RELATED: Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Date, Pricing and Games Revealed Outside of Pokémon , the highest-selling Nintendo game of the past year was Super Mario Party Jamboree with 7.48 million copies sold, followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 6.23 million copies sold. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to be the highest-selling game on the Nintendo Switch with 68.20 million copies sold, also making it the 5th highest-selling game of all-time when combined with the sales of the Wii U version. With this update, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has overtaken Pokémon Red, Green and Blue for that fifth place spot. For the Switch 2, Nintendo estimates that it’ll sell 15 million units, which is roughly on par with the original Switch’s first full year on the market. However, unlike the Nintendo Switch 2, which launches on June 5, the original Switch launched in March and sold 2 million units, which are not counted in the first-year stats as the Japanese business year is from April to March. At the console’s height during the pandemic, the Switch sold over 28 million units. With pre-orders already selling out and demand for the Switch 2 far exceeding supply, at least in Japan, where  2.2 million people entered the lottery to secure a pre-order, it may be up to the supply chain to reach or exceed that 15 million sales estimate.  Source: Nintendo IR
