"Approaching the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, I am truly delighted to present this movie to you all, along with its theme song," said Kamishiraishi. "After receiving the offer, I read the original manga all at once. I felt the characters so close — it wasn't just history, but the stories of individuals just like us. Kazuyoshi Takeda's original Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise manga was serialized in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine from February 2016 to April 2021, releasing 11 collected volumes in total. The manga won the Japan Cartoonists Association Award's Excellence Award in 2017. The synopsis reads: The island of Peleliu.
