Those wanting a taste of Purgatory ahead of the launch of Painkiller later this month are in luck, as 3D Realms and Anshar Studios have kicked off the first online demo of Painkiller for Steam Next Fest, playable now until October 20! Players will be able to team up with up to two friends in online co-op, or play on your own offline as you blast through hordes of demons in brutal, fast-paced combat.
To mark the occasion, the devteam has also dropped a new “This Is Painkiller” Overview Trailer today (sadly, still no “Painkiller” by Judas Priest), showcasing a slice of the intense co-op gameplay, punishing weapons, powerful abilities, massive bosses and more in this wicked reimagining of the cult original.
Much like in the original 2004 game by People Can Fly, the reimagining sees you trapped in Purgatory, sentenced for your transgressions against Heaven. But the Voice of the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself. As one of the Champions, you are to stop the fallen angel Azazel who is about to unleash his demonic armies onto Earth. You will face hordes of enemies, demons with unique powers and three monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim.
Painkiller will arrive October 21 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.
