On July 18th, the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise slashes back into theaters for the first time since the Clinton era with a legacy sequel titled, I Know What You Did Last Summer. There’s a new hook, though: Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has promised a much more brutal Fisherman this time around, one that’s nabbed the film an R-rating.

I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 has been officially rated “R” for “bloody horror violence, language throughout, some sexual content and brief drug use.”
For the sake of comparison, both the original I Know What You Did Last Summer and sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer were also rated “R.” Here’s the breakdown:
- I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997): “Rated R for strong horror violence and language.”
- I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998): “Rated R for intense terror violence and gore, strong language and some drug use.”
“This time, The Fisherman is a lot more brutal,” Kaytin Robinson told Collider back in April. The slasher legacy sequel sinks its hook into theaters on July 18, 2025 from Sony.
In the new movie, “When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge.
“As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”
