Nintendo Unveils The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Among Other 40th Anniversary Fun

Nintendo held one of its biggest directs in a while, giving out the first information on Mario’s 40th anniversary celebrations as well as news on all its biggest franchises: Metroid , Donkey Kong , Pokémon , Tomodachi Life and even a brand new Fire Emblem game. Catch the full direct here or check out below for a round-up of the highlights: A large chunk of the Direct was dedicated to Mario and his family of characters, starting with the plumber's next big screen adventure: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie . The cast of the first film is confirmed to be returning, and the film will be released in North America on April 3, 2026. To coincide with the film, Nintendo is releasing Nintendo Switch ports of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on October 2 as a physical collection or separately on the eShop.  Mario Tennis Fever was announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 with 38 playable characters, the most ever in the game’s history. The new game is set for a February 12, 2026 release. Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park , an upgraded version of the original game, was revealed as an enhanced version with new multiplayer features, including the Bellabel Park add-on and more new content. It’s set to be available in Spring 2026. Mario’s green dinosaur friend Yoshi gets another story with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book , which was announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 and will be released in Spring 2026. Here are some major highlights: Tomodachi Life Living the Dream got a new trailer showing how to make Mii characters in the year 2025 and a release window of Spring 2026. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrad e gets dated for Nintendo Switch 2 on January 27, 2026. Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment , the missing story from Tears of the Kingdom , has a new trailer that shows off the use of Zonai devices and a new Korok team member. The game will be released for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 6. In an outright out-there move, Nintendo is making the Virtual Boy available as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack line-up on February 17, 2026. All the games from the console are set to be released at some point. A 3D accessory is needed for the games, with Nintendo releasing a Virtual Boy replica in its shop, and a cardboard version is also available. Both versions require a Switch console to be inserted into it. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond finally got dated for December 4 along with a tease for driving sections featuring Samus riding a slick bike that will be getting its own Amiibo. Donkey King Bananza is getting some paid DLC, taking us back to DK’s original homeland with some new game modes, which launch today for the game. Pokémon got three new announcements, starting with the original Pokémon Pokopia game, which lets you, as a Ditto, create the world around you in a brand new game that blends Animal Crossing and Minecraft . This one launches on Switch 2 in 2026. Along with that, five new Mega Evolutions were announced for Pokémon Legends: Z-A . The three Kalos starters get new Megas for the game: Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja, as well as Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y. The three starters’ Mega Stones will be released via the online tournaments as prizes, while the two Raichu stones were revealed for the paid Mega Dimension DLC, which will be available at launch. The DLC will also have story elements that will be released later. Resident Evil Requiem was announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 along with a brand new trailer on the same day as other consoles, February 27, 2026. Resident Evil Biohazard and Resident Evil Village Gold Editions will also launch on Switch 2 on the same day.
