After the surprise reveal a few weeks back, Koei Tecmo and Team NINJA have dropped a new trailer at Tokyo Game Show 2025 for their upcoming Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, offering up more details about the changes and updates made to the game. Director Makoto Shibata provides the narration for the trailer, explaining the team’s decisions for the various changes.
The game’s mechanic of the Camera Obscura for combat has also been changed, with the addition of new focus and zoom filters to help with perspective and dealing damage to the ghosts you’ll encounter.
In addition, animation tweaks and texture upgrades have also been added, as well as layered sound transparency and distortion. Enhancing the sound even further is the support for 7.1.4 audio.
One of the changes introduced to the remake is the ability for players to hold hands with Mio’s twin sister, Mayu. “By doing this, the story, but also the action and the bond between the sisters is fully developed,” explained Shibata. The concept was actually explored 20 years ago during the original game’s development, but was ultimately dropped. “This full remake gave us the perfect opportunity to revisit this option.”
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam early next year.
