Ghost Story Games‘ Judas was initially revealed way back in 2022 during The Game Awards. Flash forward to now, and Ghost Story Games creative director Ken Levine (who, if you need reminding, is also the creator of BioShock) has dropped new details on the upcoming FPS over on PlayStation Blog.
Levine does acknowledge that the devteam has been silent for a while since the announcement, explaining that the team has been focusing their efforts on finishing Judas. As such, Ghost Story Games will be periodically releasing dev logs to keep fans in the loop. The goal for these dev logs is to keep them “pretty lo-fi”, allowing for more frequent updates, but not always accompanied by “fancy trailers and super polished final imagery.”
With that out of the way, the team has finished a major milestone in the game’s development in Villainy. Comparing the villains found in BioShock or BioShock Infinite, the villain is always going to be the villain. However, in Judas, you can choose who will be the villain. Your actions will attract the ship’s leaders, known as The Big 3, to you as allies. But ignore one of them enough, and they become the villain. From there, they will get access to a new suite of powers to subvert your actions and goals.
Levine then pivots to the idea of character, mentioning Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and its Nemesis System. “The system allows you to develop small relationships with multiple orcs. However, their goals were a little different than ours, because there are so many different orcs and they don’t have time to develop them into characters.”
Contrasting that system with Judas, players will get to know the characters in the game more intimately, where losing one of them will feel akin to losing a friend. “We want to play with that dynamic, and we want that choice to be super hard. The Big 3 are all going to be competing for your favor and attention. They can bribe you, save you in battle, talk shit about the other characters, and share with you their darkest secrets. But eventually, you’ve got to decide who you trust and who you don’t.”
As for that elusive release date, Levine states that the devteam aren’t ready to pin it down just yet. “As you know, release dates have a way of slipping by, and we’d like to avoid having to change the date after we announce it. But we know Judas is not really a game until the players get their hands on it, and that’s a day everyone on the team is working toward.”
The story for Judas revolves around a disintegrating starship, and a desperate escape plan. You are the mysterious and troubled Judas. Your only hope for survival is to make or break alliances with your worst enemies. Will you work together to fix what you broke – or will you leave it to burn?
Judas is currently in development for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
