New Demo Released for VHS-Centric Survival Horror title ‘Dead Format’ [Trailer]

Originally titled Video Ghastlies, Oro Interactive and solo developer Katanalevy have rechristened their upcoming Survival Horror title Dead Format. In addition, they’ve released the first public demo for the game, which is available on Steam.

The new demo of has players exploring two VHS tapes, each a twisted world inspired by iconic film eras and brought to life with original mixed media. Everything in Dead Format is created exclusively for the game, including the VHS footage, which is recorded and edited by developer Katanalevy to give each tape an authentic, era-specific look.

Dead Format takes place in 1990s Scotland, and your brother has gone missing after becoming obsessed with a mysterious new VHS format. It turns out that some things aren’t meant to be recorded… and now, they’re watching you back. You must follow your brother’s trail through the tapes, exploring nightmarish worlds inspired by iconic film eras, from 1930s gothic terror to Carpenter-inspired body horror, Italian slashers, and found footage. Uncover the sinister government plot to ban these “Video Ghastlies” before they find you.

As you venture through these worlds, your apartment serves as a temporary sanctuary where you can catch your breath, analyze clues, and unravel the mystery behind the cursed tapes. Each era presents its own set of terrifying challenges, enemies, and puzzles to overcome.
