Netflix Eyes Expansion of Global Smash Hit ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Through Sequels and Beyond

They sing. They dance. They kick demon ass so well that KPop Demon Hunters have become a global phenomenon. So much so that Netflix is already eyeing sequels and more.

Sony Pictures Animation’s animated hit, now streaming on Netflix, continues to smash records.

It became the first Netflix original film to reach a new viewing peak in its sixth week and is now the most popular animated Netflix movie of all time, per the streamer. The film’s music, particularly the track “Golden,” has reclaimed the number one spot on the Billboard 200.

All of which to say that KPop Demon Hunters has fans clamoring for more, and The Wrap notes that Netflix is already considering ways to expand the film’s success through sequels and beyond. “Among the projects being bandied about at Netflix are a stage musical, live-action remake, series, and, of course, a pair of sequels to round out a full-on KPop Demon Hunters film trilogy,” The Wrap’s sources revealed.

Netflix compares the surprise hit to Disney’s Frozen, which means that short films are also being eyed as a means to bridge the various sequels. While merchandise has definitely taken off in the wake of KPop Demon Hunters’ release on June 20, expect Netflix to lean into it even further as the film continues to dominate on the charts.

One key hurdle to clear before anything is official, though: directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have yet to sign on to additional projects. Either way,  Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation intend to work on the franchise together, and it’s definitely going to get bigger with what sounds like numerous projects.

In KPop Demon Hunters, “When Korean pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey aren’t selling out stadiums, they’re using their secret identities as demon hunters to protect their fans from ever-present supernatural danger. Together, they must face their biggest threat — an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.”

The animated film is directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans from a script they co-wrote with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan.

Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Byung Hun Lee star.
