Ryan Murphy’s true crime-based Netflix series “Monster” season four will put the spotlight on the infamous Lizzie Borden, and Ella Beatty (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”) has been set to play the axe-wielding murderess.
Deadline reports that Rebecca Hall (Godzilla vs. Kong, The Night House) and Vicky Krieps (Went Up the Hill, Phantom Thread) are finalizing deals to join Beatty on the upcoming season.
Beatty will portray Lizzie Borden, with Hall said to be portraying Lizzie’s stepmother and Krieps playing a housemaid. The new season will tell the story of Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts.
The infamous case has inspired no shortage of adaptations, either. Lizzie Borden has been the subject of multiple movies and television shows over the years, including a new indie horror movie titled The Lizzie Borden Game, just released last week, and Christina Ricci played Borden in Lifetime’s The Lizzie Borden Chronicles in 2015. Chloë Sevigny later played Lizzie Borden in the 2018 feature film Lizzie, with Kristen Stewart as the maid.
Season four will mark a reunion between Beatty, Hall, Krieps, and Murphy, as all three actors have previously worked with the creator on previous shows. Beatty, whose parents are Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, made her screen acting debut with a recurring role on Murphy’s “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”. Hall can be seen in Murphy’s upcoming FX series “The Beauty,“ and Krieps stars in “Monster“ season three, The Original Monster, starring Charlie Hunnam as the killer that inspired The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: Ed Gein.
“Monster“ launched with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, an enduring Top 5 Netflix English-language series. It was followed by The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and the upcoming The Original Monster, which will also feature suspense master Alfred Hitchcock.
