In the wake of Barbie‘s smash hit success at the box office, Mattel announced a movie adaptation of the iconic Magic 8 Ball toy, but that project has now morphed into a series.

M. Night Shyamalan(!) has announced that he’ll be directing and co-creating a Magic 8 Ball series from Mattel Studios, written by Brad Falchuk (“American Horror Story”)!

“Been working on this for a couple years,” Shyamalan writes on Instagram. “Who’s in?”

The upcoming series, which has been co-created by Shyamalan and Falchuk, aims “to reimagine the classic Magic 8 Ball as the centerpiece of a high-concept, character-driven supernatural drama that blends psychological intensity with cultural intrigue.” Shyamalan and Falchuk will serve as co-showrunners on the “premium scripted live-action television series.”

Developed in the 1950s and manufactured by Mattel, the novelty Magic 8 Ball is one of the most iconic toys of all time, telling fortunes and answering questions with a shake of the ball.

The official press release from Mattel Studios explains, “With 1 million units sold annually, the Magic 8 Ball has been in existence for 75 years and remains a pop culture staple, captivating generations with its mysterious ability to answer life’s questions with a simple shake. More than a toy, it has become a symbol of curiosity, fate, and fun, and referenced in countless films, television shows, music, and literature. Its combination of playful charm and enigmatic mystique makes it a uniquely fertile ground for reinvention in premium storytelling.”

M. Night Shyamalan will serve as director, co-creator and co-showrunner of the Magic 8 Ball series, while Brad Falchuk will serve as the project’s writer, co-creator and co-showrunner.
