Jim Henson’s ‘Labyrinth’ Returns to Theaters for 40th Anniversary in January

David Bowie and his legendary cod piece are heading back to the big screen.

Labyrinth will receive a 40th anniversary theatrical re-release from Fathom Events, Variety has learned.

The 4K remaster of  Jim Henson‘s fantasy classic will play in participating North American theaters from January 8 to January 11.

The reissue will include a special featurette with footage from the Labyrinth Experience & Masked Ball, a fan event that was held in the UK last month.

The 1986 film follows a teenager as she journeys through a fantastical maze to save her baby brother from the Goblin King.

Bowie stars opposite Jennifer Connelly and a variety of creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Henson directs from a script by Monty Python co-founder Terry Jones. George Lucas serves as executive producer.

Fathom Entertainment CEO Ray Nutt commented, “The magical combination of Jim Henson, George Lucas, David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, and hundreds of extraordinary creatures and puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop made Labyrinth a landmark fantasy classic, one that is beloved by Fathom Entertainment audiences over the years.”

Nutt continued, “We are honored to bring this 1986 epic back to theaters from Sony Pictures for its 40th anniversary in this special presentation and provide a brilliant night at the movies for audiences of all ages.”

Despite being seen as a box office disappointment upon release, grossing $34 million globally against a $25 million production budget, Labyrinth has enjoyed a vibrant second life as a cult favorite.

Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu) closed a deal to direct the long-gestating Labyrinth sequel back in January.
