James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez may finally be ready for another round of Motorball.
A sequel to Alita: Battle Angel — co-written and produced by Cameron and directed by Rodriguez — has been discussed since the original film’s release in 2019, but Cameron is now assuring fans that progress is being made.
“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans,” Cameron told Empire. “Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie.”
He reveals, “In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that.”
Cameron, who’s been busy with the Avatar franchise, continues, “Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Rodriguez’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here in a few weeks.”
Back in 2020, Rodriguez commented, “I know other people would love to see another, and I would love to do another one. As far as where it would go or how it would be made, I think streaming has opened up many opportunities such as sequels.”
In Alita: Battle Angel, a deactivated cyborg is revived but can’t remember anything of her past. She embarks on a quest to find out who she is, using her prodigious fighting skills to take on corrupt authorities along the way.
Rosa Salazar stars in the cyberpunk action film alongside Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson.
Made on a reported $170 million budget, Alita took in $405 million at the worldwide box office, making it Rodriguez’s highest-grossing film.
