Last night’s sixth episode of “IT: Welcome to Derry” was a pretty damn big one, but in order to talk about it we’ll need to dive into some spoilers. If that’s cool with you, you may proceed!
The big reveal in “Welcome to Derry” Episode 6 is that Madeleine Stowe’s Ingrid Kersh is the daughter of Bob Gray, the performer who played the original Pennywise the Clown at the Derry carnival in the early 1900s. Like in King’s novel, Pennywise was a real clown that the interdimensional being known as IT decided to take the form of, and this has led Ingrid to believe that Pennywise is her dead father. It’s for this reason that Ingrid has been helping IT achieve its sinister goals, and the episode also revealed that Ingrid is a creepy clown too.
Ingrid Kersh has been haunting the show’s characters as Periwinkle the clown all this time, a side act to her father’s Pennywise that sees Ingrid dressed up in her own clown attire. Periwinkle was glimpsed in previous episodes of “IT: Welcome to Derry,” most notably in the photo the kids took in the graveyard. That wasn’t Pennywise, but rather Periwinkle the clown.
It’s interesting to note that Ingrid Kersh is one of the forms IT takes in Andy Muschietti’s movie IT: Chapter Two, with the show’s big Episode 6 twist adding several new layers to that character’s appearance in the movie. We’ll be learning much more about Periwinkle and her father Bob Gray in Episode 7, which premieres the night of Sunday, December 7 on HBO Max.

Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs tells EW, “[Bill Skarsgård’s] performance goes to some unexpected places [in the weeks ahead]. [He] has opportunities with this character that the story of the films did not present. Not only are you getting a really thrilling build-up to seeing Pennywise, you are gonna see Bill doing things you’ve not seen him do in this character yet.”
