Almost a year since Sony Pictures announced its intentions to bring Helldivers to the big screen, they’ve found their director in longtime The Fast and the Furious series director Justin Lin. Additionally, Gary Dauberman, the writer for IT and Annabelle, has penned the script for the adaptation to Arrowhead Game Studios’ hit co-op shooter.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lin will also produce the film via his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner, with Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan co-producing.
The article notes that while Lin doesn’t play video games, he used that as a strength when pitching his take on the film. Lin aims to “find the humanity in the characters and weave timely themes” into the story for the film adaptation, while building out a world and mythology.
Helldivers originally launched back in 2015 as a top-down shooter for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and eventually Steam. The 2024 sequel switched over to a third-person perspective, and has been a massive success. Heavily inspired by Paul Verhoeven‘s classic 1997 action film Starship Troopers, Helldivers and its sequel sees soldiers of the 22nd century defending Super Earth and its managed democracy (aka an authoritarian government) against alien insects called Terminids, as well as Cyborgs and Illuminate.
