Sucker Punch has announced additional visual modes for its upcoming semi-sequel Ghost of Yōtei. Whereas the original Ghost of Tsushima had its Kurosama Mode that honored legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, Ghost of Yōtei will have three of these visual modes, including one inspired by 13 Assassins (and Ichi the Killer) director Takashi Miike.
The reveal was part of the gameplay deep dive, which was revealed during a dedicated State of Play, alongside new Limited Edition PlayStation 5 bundles for Ghost of Yōtei. For starters, Yotei will bring back “Kurosawa Mode,” which pays tribute to Akira Kurosawa with grainy black-and-white, audio filtering and enhanced wind effects. Additionally, the game will introduce a “Miike Mode,” which pushes the camera in closer to the player during combat, and increases the blood and mud splatter.
The third mode pays tribute to Shinichirō Watanabe, director behind Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. In this mode, the game’s music is swapped out for Lo-Fi beats during exploration and combat. Additionally, the Lo-Fi tracks are both original and directed by Watanabe himself!
As for those bundles, fans can grab either the Gold Limited Edition Bundle, which is inspired by the Japanese art form, kintsugi, a traditional process to repair broken ceramics with lacquer and gold; or they can snag the Black Limited Edition Bundle will be exclusively available at PlayStation Direct. This version draws inspiration from another Japanese traditional art form, Sumi-e, which is the use of black ink on paintings.
Ghost of Yōtei launches on October 2.
