Get to Know the WIND BREAKER Characters

WIND BREAKER is an anime for fans of delinquents with big ol’ hearts of gold. Balancing the intense battles with relatable stories and emotions, it’s hard not to get attached to the characters we meet along the way. While Bofurin is the main group in the story, they tend to meet other delinquents who all come with their own backstories and motivations. Spoiler: you’ll probably get attached to some of Bofurin’s adversaries, too. Want a breakdown of the WIND BREAKER characters we’ve met so far? Need to remember who that one guy was in that one group with that particularly cool jacket? Curious about where you can get a delicious plate of omurice? Check out our guide below! WIND BREAKER CHARACTERS Bofurin The Captain The Four Kings The Second-Year Students The First-Year Students Shishitoren The Captain The Vice-Captain Other Noteworthy Members KEEL The Captain The VIPS Other Noteworthy Members Roppo Ichiza The Chairman Other Noteworthy Members Gravel The Captain Notable Civilians Who Is Yamato Endo? Who Are the Members of Bofurin? Bofurin is the group we’re primarily focused on in WIND BREAKER . Composed of students from Furin High School, they have a reputation for being some of the toughest guys out there, which is why Sakura is eager to face them. However, Sakura quickly learns that their strength doesn’t just lie in their skills in battle, but their compassion toward their community, and even their enemies. As the series continues, we get hints of the time when Bofurin wasn’t made up of wholesome good boys who’d help an elderly person across the street, but thanks to Hajime Umemiya’s guidance, they’ve become an unstoppable force of positivity and support. The Captain Name: Hajime Umemiya The Bofurin captain has a rather carefree attitude, much to Sakura’s surprise (and Toma Hiragi’s never-ending stress). You’d be more likely to find Umemiya gardening than fighting, but that doesn’t mean he won’t step in when his team needs him. His heart is about as powerful as his fists, making him a worthy leader of the group. The Four Kings Toma Hiragi Saku Mizuki Takumi Momose Tasuku Tsubakino RELATED: WIND BREAKER Quiz: Which Bofurin Member Are You Most Like? The Four Kings each have their own team that they lead. Toma Hiragi (Tamon Team), Saku Mizuki (Komoku Team), Takumi Momose (Zojo Team) and Tasuku Tsubakino (Jikoku Team) have each earned Bofurin’s respect in their own way. That said, we’ve only seen Hiragi and Tsubakino in action so far. Hiragi tends to stick close to Umemiya and is prone to excessive worrying. Meanwhile, the stylish and “I can’t believe you can fight in heels” Tsubaki is someone who fully embraces who he is and inspires that kind of self-love in others. TWO MORE MEMBERS OF NOTE: We can't talk about Tsubaki without talking about the twins Seiryu Sakaki and Uryu Sakaki. Seiryu (the older brother who does the talking) and Uryu (the younger brother who usually stays quiet) are Tsubaki's Vice-Captains. As we see in a fight later in the series, these two have flawless coordination in battle and are more than happy to clear a path for Tsubaki. The Second-Year Students Ren Kaji Takeshi Enomoto Yuto Kusumi The second-year students we’ve seen so far are Ren Kaji (who is very similar to Sakura), Takeshi Enomoto (who you’ll remember for the way he pronounces his r’s) and Yuto Kusumi. These three come to the aid of the first-years when they’re needed, also offering solid advice when their juniors show any signs of doubt… though Kaji might punch you in the face if you compliment him too much. Told you he’s like Sakura. The First-Year Students Haruka Sakura Akihiko Nirei Hayato Suo Kyotaro Sugishita Mitsuki Kiryu Taiga Tsugeura Masaki Anzai We spend the most time with the first-year students, more specifically, Haruka Sakura. Sakura enters Bofurin in the hopes of being the strongest, unaware of the fact that WIND BREAKER is far more interested in strong bonds of friendship and helping people heal the emotional scars they’ve been dealing with. Along the way, Sakura meets the enthusiastic Akihiko Nirei, the mysterious Leonardo DiCaprio Hayato Suo, the brash Kyotaro Sugishita, the laid-back Mitsuki Kiryu, and the “never skip leg day” Taiga Tsugeura. Another notable first-year student is Masaki Anzai, who kickstarts the fight against KEEL due to his friend being in trouble with the extremely hostile gang. Who Are the Members of Shishitoren? Shishitoren is the first major opponent Bofurin faces in WIND BREAKER . Led by Choji Tomiyama, the group comes off as being pretty dangerous, especially toward their own teammates when one of them messes up. Their leader is eager to face Umemiya in the hopes of having fun. However, as the battle progresses, it becomes clear that the group has been fractured for a while, the definition of “fun” becoming so muddied that it’s barely recognizable. The Captain Name: Choji Tomiyama Tomiyama comes off as a playful but unhinged guy who's just looking to have a little bit of fun. Those who lose a fight in Shishitoren are likely to be discarded without a care in the world. Tomiyama wasn’t always like this, though. The light has faded from his eyes, leaving a shell of a team leader who’s lost his way. Through his battle against Umemiya, Tomiyama’s able to see the error of his ways and work to lead Shishitoren in a better direction. The Vice-Captain Name: Jo Togame RELATED: How WIND BREAKER Highlights Shonen’s Best Features Togame is the closest person to Tomiyama and does whatever he wants, no matter who it hurts in the process. Togame basically changed who he is in order to try and keep the smile on Tomiyama’s face, willingly bearing the weight of Shishitoren’s harsh actions. To him, there’s no one who shines as brightly as Shishitoren’s leader, and he’s been trying to piece him back together all this time. That said, his battle against Sakura reinvigorates him. Other Noteworthy Shishitoren Members Yukinari Arima Minoru Kanuma Kota Sako Shishitoren and Bofurin fight in a handful of one-on-one matches that highlight specific members of the group. First up, there’s Yukinari Arima, who tries (and seriously fails) to face Sugishita. The only thing worse than a quick knock-out is one where the guy just keeps dodging until he wears you out. That’s what happens to Minoru Kanuma when he goes up against Suo. After that, Kota Sako faces Hiragi, revealing that the two are former friends. ONE MORE MEMBER OF NOTE: We caught a glimpse of a young man named Saruwatari, who was chasing after a middle school student named Naohiro Sasaki. Sakura and Sugishita took care of him in an instant and crossed enemy territory to do so. This led to a frightening ending for Saruwatari where Togame attacked him for his defeat. Who Are the Members of KEEL? Unlike Shishitoren, which ended up being a redeemable group of misguided young men, KEEL is a completely ruthless gang and the most violent one we’ve seen so far. Led by Shingo Natori, he and the rest of KEEL won’t hesitate to use weapons (usually blunt objects) against their enemies. They also delight in intimidating (and even beating) new members into submission and aren’t above committing crimes — or forcing newcomers into doing it. The Captain Name: Shingo Natori Natori is the most sinister of the group and thrives on violence and mayhem. This is why he wanted to face Kaji and push him into letting out the rage he’d been trying to suppress. Originally, Atsushi Nagato (Anzai’s friend) mistook KEEL’s captain as a good person who he could learn from. Soon, he found out the hard way that Natori is someone who breaks those who are weaker than him since, to him, they’re easier to control that way. The VIPS Takeru Kongo Shiyu Kirishima Taishi Mogami Renji Kaga Hansuke Tone RELATED: Anime to Watch if You Like Yu Yu Hakusho While the fight against KEEL is more of an all-out brawl compared to the Shishitoren battle, there are still some big match-ups between KEEL’s strongest (known as VIPs) and Bofurin. This includes Takeru Kongo going up against Sakura, Shiyu Kirishima facing Taiga, Taishi Mogami fighting Sugishita, Renji Kaga versus Mitsuki, and Hansuke Tone being on the receiving end of Suo’s anger. Other Noteworthy KEEL Members Atsushi Nagato To be honest, Nagato is more of a victim of KEEL than an actual member, as it's clear that he’s only trying to survive their brutality. All Nagato wanted to do was get stronger. Unbeknownst to him, that made him the perfect target for KEEL's sadistic leader. While his friend, Anzai, initially wants to figure out a way to help without Bofurin, Sakura and the first-years (and later the second-years) come together to defeat KEEL. Who Are the Members of Roppo Ichiza? Roppo Ichiza is a bit of a unique gang compared to the others in WIND BREAKER . While they do have a chairman and other notable members, Roppo Ichiza is actually made up of people in the red light district who wanted to help protect Keisei Street. Their numbers are small, but mighty, as seen in the top players in the organization. It’s also worth mentioning that there used to be tension between Roppo Ichiza and Bofurin before Umemiya changed things for the better. The Chairman Name: Kanji Nakamura RELATED: WIND BREAKER is an Ode to How Much We Love Delinquents Kanji Nakamura is an absolute force who has a tendency to jump into things without assessing the entire situation. He can be a lot to deal with, but his heart is absolutely in the right place. He takes great pride in what Roppo Ichiza does and never hesitates to help someone in need. Nakamura takes an immediate liking to Sakura and the rest of the first-years after they help protect his beloved Shizuka Narita. Other Noteworthy Roppo Ichiza Members Akihito Miyoshi Shogo Hidaka Ritsu Otowa What Roppo Ichiza lacks in numbers they more than make up for in strength. We see this with members like Akihito Miyoshi, Shogo Hidaka and Ritsu Otowa. The only thing these three can’t keep up with his their chairman’s exuberant energy as he can sometimes run ahead to face danger before they can stop him. Who Are the Members of Gravel? When we first meet Gravel, they’re in pursuit of Narita after being hired to bring her in. Their leader, Shuhei Suzuri, thinks very little of concepts like “dreams” and “love,” and is just trying to get the job done so they can all have enough money to eat. This is because Gravel comes from the Sunaba district, an impoverished area that Narita also comes from. Despite the huge threat the group poses, Tsubaki realizes that Suzuri has never had the opportunity to experience real love and compassion. The Captain Name: Shingo Natori RELATED: 10 Anime Delinquents Too Good To Be Bad Suzuri initially comes off as cold and distant, but it doesn’t take long to realize that it stems from where he comes from and his need to survive. He also makes video game references every now and then, referring to certain fights as “boss battles.” That said, he’s not opposed to taking the easy way out, as seen when Suzuri tries to give herself up to Gravel. While Gravel definitely has an intimidating number of people in the group, Suzuri is the main focus, as he's the one who decided to create the group in an attempt to make things better for everyone. Notable Civilians While the delinquents of WIND BREAKER are what the anime often delves into, there are a couple of regular citizens who are given a chance to shine in the story. In a way, the town Bofurin resides in (Makochi) feels like a character, as people are often cheering for our main characters and offering them support. Kotoha Tachibana Tachibana is the first person Sakura meets when he arrives in town. She works at Cafe Pothos, a spot where Bofurin frequently hangs out and enjoys her food (especially the omurice). Umemiya is very fond of Tachibana and treats her like a sister since they grew up in the same group home together. In turn, Tachibana is extremely supportive of Bofurin and never hesitates to let Sakura know that it's okay for him to trust them (though she does get annoyed at Umemiya’s excitement levels around her). Naohiro Sasaki Sasaki is a middle schooler who is saved by Sakura and Sugishita after being pursued by Shishitoren. Sasaki had been going after a shop lifter and ended up on Shishitoren’s turf. Since Sakura and Sugishita technically crossed the border between Bofurin and Shishitoren to save Sasaki, it starts the battle between the two groups. Mio Tsuchiya Tsuchiya is a childhood friend of both Anzai and Nagato. When Anzai tries to deal with KEEL without Bofurin’s help, Tsuchiya tells Sakura everything that she knows about the situation. Once Sakura sees her crying due to how worried she is, he tells her to leave it all up to him Ito and Yui As a child, Tsubaki worried about the fact that he liked things that were typically associated with girls. After meeting the elderly couple, Ito and Yui, Tsubaki got the support he needed to embrace the things he loved, leading to the Tsubaki we know and love today. Tsubaki ends up introducing Sakura, Nirei and Suo to Ito, and together they help him deal with the grief of losing his wife. Shizuka Narita Someone else that Tsubaki holds dear is Narita, a singer at the pub, OUGI. Tsubaki treats Narita like a little sister, and the two are happy to share the same stage together. When someone offered to buy Narita back in the Sunaba district, she ran. This is how she met Nakamura and began singing at the pub. Narita really cares for Nakamura and Tsubaki, going so far as to try and sacrifice herself to get the conflict between Roppo Ichiza and Gravel to stop. Fortunately, everyone refuses her request and decides to protect her instead. Who Is Yamato Endo? At the end of the battle against KEEL, a mysterious, tattooed figure rose from the defeated group (hopefully you stayed after the credits of WIND BREAKER Season 2 Episode 16 to see it). Despite Bofurin's efforts in the all-out brawl, he claims that they have gotten weaker. Later on in WIND BREAKER Season 2, we finally get to meet him. After the events that occurred with Gravel, Endo makes his grand entrance. While Sakura doesn't know who he is, he can see that Endo is someone who immediately puts everyone, including Tsubaki and Nakamura, on edge. We later find out that Endo used to be in Bofurin, but left after a year. We don't know his motivations yet, but his presence, despite his easy-going demeanor, lets off a frightening aura. Also, the fact that he's able to dodge attacks from Tsubaki, Nakamura, and Suo is, frankly, incredible.
