The 2015 fantasy light novel to TV anime adaptation GATE is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and today a second season for the series entitled GATE 2: Tides of Conflict was officially announced. The new season is set to focus on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (featured above). A release date for the new season was not announced at the time of reporting. Toru Takahashi will direct GATE 2: Tides of Conflict at Studio M2. Tatsuhiko Urahata will provide the series composition and scripts, with Shigeru Fujita providing the character designs. More information will be revealed on the Oshi site for Gate 2 in the future. Takumi Yanai wrote and Daisuke Izuka and Kurojishi illustrated the original GATE light novel series, which were published in Japan from 2006 – 2008 by Arcadia and from 2020 – 2015 by AlphaPolis. Since 2017, AlphaPolis has also published the GATE sequel and prequel novels, which are also written by Takumi Yanai. Sentai Filmworks published the 2015 GATE TV anime, and describes the story of the first season : A gate to another world appears in the middle of Tokyo’s Ginza District, and the citizens of Tokyo are attacked by cavalry, dragons, and demons. Itami, an otaku who was in the area to purchase his long-awaited doujinshi, becomes the accidental hero of the day and gets promoted to second lieutenant of the Self-Defense Force. Not long after, he’s sent on a mission through the gate into the other world with typical otaku-like expectations of what he’ll find there.
