Gachiakuta Episode 23 Recap, “The Man Who Will Be Stronger”

Based on the manga by Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou, Gachiakuta is the story of Rudo, a boy from the slums of an idyllic floating city known as the Sphere. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit and tossed into the rancid garbage pit far below the Sphere, Rudo will do whatever it takes to survive in the hellish depths so he can take revenge on the people who sent him there. Enjin’s music blares as they drive; the intense beats and Enjin’s wild steering keep the car’s occupants awake. Rudo keeps asking why they need to wear sunglasses, but everyone ignores him. Better Than a Genius Later at HQ, August tries to start a conversation with Rudo, but this time Rudo’s the one doing the ignoring. Enjin apologizes and reassures August that it’s just because the boy is nervous about seeing Zanka, who’s still recovering from his fight with Jabber. Rudo had asked earlier for flowers to bring him, unaware that live blooms are much more rare and precious because they’re difficult to grow on the Ground. Delmon loved the idea of bringing flowers to someone healing up, however, and helped him find a shop that sells artificial ones. Rudo worries he’s pushing Sphere culture on his friends. RELATED: Basic Doesn’t Back Down: A Thank You Letter to Gachiakuta's Zanka Nijiku Rudo hesitates at the infirmary door. Eishia wasn’t able to heal all of the poison, so Zanka’s recovery has been taking some time. Follo suggests that Zanka might be feeling low because he was the only one severely injured, but Enjin asks what he’s talking about. He opens the door and Rudo panics as he sees… Zanka, dressed and sitting up, meditating quietly in his bed. Enjin closes the door quietly and tells the others that Zanka has hit rock bottom before and crawled his way back up. He’ll be something even better than a genius one day, Enjin says. Getting Stronger… But Not Like That Enjin’s choker chirps as Semiu contacts him. There’s a visitor who wants to apologize, she says. It’s Remlin and the mayor from Canvas Town , and they confess that the wrong spell was drawn on Zanka. Well, more specifically, Remlin pranked the far-too-serious Cleaner with a different spell than the others got. He tells Zanka to flex his arm, which transforms into a massively muscled limb for a few seconds before deflating back to normal. Remorseful, Remlin apologizes, and everyone waits for Zanka to berate him. RELATED: Rock Band Karanoah Shares Gachiakuta Cour 2 Anime Ending Song Music Video Instead, the Cleaner starts to laugh. He’s never been pranked before, and besides, his injury isn’t Remlin’s fault. Spells are just insurance. He should have just been better, he says, so he doesn’t need any sort of apology. Rudo stays behind as the others leave and Zanka says it better not be out of pity. His injuries don’t matter, he yells, as long as he gets stronger. Rudo had been feeling responsible, but now sees Zanka in a new light. Reward Enjin gives Zanka some snacks and treats everyone pitched in to get him. (Zanka is not so secretly pleased.) Enjin and Zanka chat about Rudo and the Raiders’ goals, which didn’t seem to include killing them. But if they’re going to keep making trash beasts, the Cleaners will have to face them. Rudo needs to realize he’s forgetting something, Zanka says, and then notices Enjin has fallen asleep. They’d observed the Cleaners survive the border crossing, and while they have the Watchman Series boots, the Raiders know exactly where they are. And he’s already prepared a proper trash beast for crossing the border. Zodyl gives Bundus the reward he requested, a small totem with a name carved in the base: Canis Surebrec. Bundus is happy and honored to join the Raiders full time. Zodyl begins planning their next moves. He wants Bundus to find the Giver who makes the communication chokers while the rest search for more of the Watchman Series and then they’ll go to the Sphere. What’s next for the Cleaners?
