Based on the manga by Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou, Gachiakuta is the story of Rudo, a boy from the slums of an idyllic floating city known as the Sphere. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit and tossed into the rancid garbage pit far below the Sphere, Rudo will do whatever it takes to survive in the hellish depths so he can take revenge on the people who sent him there. One particularly rough jolt makes Riyo’s injuries ache, so Enjin takes them to see a familiar face: Alice Stilza, the doctor . She’s as grumpy as ever, snapping at another patient as the Cleaners come in. Alice was once a researcher looking into a treatment for body pollution, her fan Enjin tells the group, but suffered aftereffects from the pollution exposure. Her grandchildren are visiting, she says, and Rudo’s shocked to see it’s the mask maker August and the healer Eishia . August warns the team that the Cloud is forming, so they better find shelter before the storm hits. Sure enough, a trash storm arrives, and the Cleaners hunker down inside their vehicle under the shelter of a rock outcropping. Riding Out the Storm When the Sphere moves, it drops trash, Enjin tells Rudo. The floating city generally follows the same route, but since the garbage falls from so high, there’s no way to predict where exactly it will fall. Rudo gets lost in the fuzzy memory of his own fall to the Ground, which is suddenly interrupted by the chiming of Enjin’s communications collar. Semiu checks in and mentions that Cleaners HQ is suffering from a small infestation at the moment. She recommends coming in from the back entrance. Rudo’s confused, but it’s a code, Enjin explains. Marauders are at HQ. RELATED: Gachiakuta and the Tropes of Anime Vengeance Outside the Cleaners HQ, a group of men armed to the teeth fire a rocket at the building’s facade. The leader yells that they just want the Sphereite, and they’ll leave the Cleaners alone if they hand him over. Semiu’s voice crackles out from a speaker. She doesn’t know who tricked them into coming, she says, but she’s glad they’re out in the open. Fight Fair The leader boasts that they like a fair fight, but in reality, his team is just a distraction while another group tries to sneak in elsewhere. As the smoke from the rocket explosion clears, the marauders are surprised to see that it had no effect on the exterior. The other team walks up and says they had the same problem. It’s because they have an invincible shut-in providing protection, Semiu tells them amiably. The front door opens, and the Giver with the glasses herself steps outside. RELATED: Gachiakuta and the Importance of Anger Furious, the leader fires the rocket launcher right at Semiu. She activates her vital instrument, EYES, and time slows from her point of view. She elegantly catches the rocket, spins and throws it right back. The enraged marauders unleash a hail of bullets, and time slows again as she dodges them. Semiu knocks them all out with perfectly placed punches and kicks. Enjin and Rudo walk up at that moment, and Enjin wonders who told them about the Sphereite. Falling into the Trap The Cleaners go to a cozy bar and restaurant called Dan Dulse to celebrate the end of a job, much to the annoyance of one of the regulars. Rudo asks if they should be more alert, but Enjin and Gris reassure him that breaks are necessary. Besides, Semiu runs off marauders often. (She prefers staying at the office to hunting trash beasts.) Riyo explains that not all Givers are attackers on the front lines; people who want to keep their vital instrument extra safe tend to be defenders. Just then, the Givers on Team Child arrive at the restaurant. Rudo immediately recognizes Dear Santa, who had fought with him to share his sweets . There’s also Guita Hebby Fantasia, who wears a plush kaiju suit, and the adult and supervisor of the group, Bro Santa. Guita asks Rudo about the Sphere, and Bro shushes her so no one overhears. RELATED: Gachiakuta Quiz: What Kind of Vital Instrument Would You Have? Rudo gets away from the chatty Guita and sits at an empty table. A hooded man at the next table strikes up a friendly conversation with him… and then holds up Amo’s boots. The man grabs Rudo’s throat and introduces himself as the Raiders’ leader. All of the Givers leap at the leader as Chtoni jumps up from behind and opens a portal. The Cleaners and the Raiders disappear inside. The Cleaners, minus the Support staff, find themselves in a dark chamber. The Raiders and their leaders emerge from the darkness ahead and walk toward them… What are the Raiders after?
