As good as Arkane Austin’s Prey was, it had little to do with Human Head Studios’ original 2006 game Prey, which if you recall, had a sequel in development before being sent to development hell and ultimately cancelled. As another case of “What if?” in the industry, former Human Head Studios developer David Halsted recently uploaded some videos from the cancelled version of Prey 2.
However, for whatever reason, Halsted ended up deleting the videos from his YouTube page, but not before YouTuber Faust grabbed most of the videos, combined them into one, and reuploaded them for everyone to enjoy.
For those that need a refresher, Prey 2 centred around U.S. Marshal Killian Samuels, who starts the game on the passenger flight that crashes onto the Sphere, which was shown during the events of Prey. Samuels becomes a bounty hunter on the alien world Exodus, where he would eventually meet up with the protagonist from the first game, Domasi “Tommy” Tawodi.
Prey 2 was revealed a few months after the release of the original game, with development beginning in earnest in 2009, after original publisher 3D Realms transferred the Prey IP to Bethesda Softworks. From there, Prey 2 changed from its original incarnation into an open world game. For unknown reasons, Human Head quietly halted development on the game in late 2011, before Bethesda ultimately cancelled the game in 2014, leading to the eventual reboot by Arkane Austin.
The first segment of the footage shows the events following Samuels’ crash, when he is eventually knocked unconscious. From there, the following videos appear to be a rougher version of a build, showcasing the open world aspect of the game, as well as a few of the game’s mechanics, such as interrogation.
As we all know, the rebooted 2017 version of Prey, while being an excellent game, did not sell as well as Bethesda had hoped that it would. As a result, the series is once again left in limbo.
