Seeing as it’s that time of year on this side of the pond, it’s perfect timing for Fira Soft and indie.io to have launched Kriophobia, their third-person survival horror title that plunges players into the frozen depths of a forgotten Soviet military complex. Available now on Steam and GOG.com, Kriophobia (which is fear of the cold, if you were wondering) has a 20% launch discount on both platforms until December 4.
Taking place on Zhokhov Island in the East Siberian Sea, players assume the role of Anna, a geophysicist on a scientific expedition. When disaster strikes and the crew becomes trapped in a long-forgotten Soviet military base beneath the permafrost, it turns out to be the least of. The deeper she goes, the more she feels drawn to this place, as if it strangely welcomes her back…
Inspired by genre classics like Silent Hill and Resident Evil, Kriophobia blends slow-burn psychological storytelling with tense survival gameplay, and pairs resource and temperature management with familiar tropes of the genre such as exploration, environmental puzzles, and avoid-or-confront encounters that reward stealth and careful planning.
Visually, the title combines comic-ink linework with painterly textures with familiar static camera angles to create “cinematic, uncanny scenes.” A Slavic-inspired soundtrack and layered sound design heighten isolation and dread, making the environment itself a relentless threat.
