Fans of Grant Howitt and Christopher Taylor‘s Heart: The City Beneath have a new sourcebook on the way in Ways & Means. Recently launched on Backerkit, the campaign has already crushed its goal, with plenty of time remaining to get those stretch goals.
Following on from the success of the corebook (which resulted in seven Ennies) and Gareth Hanrahan’s epic adventure Dagger in the Heart (which Aaron reviewed), Ways & Means adds “a load of stuff” to Heart. How much stuff? For starters, there are three new classes in the Witness, Blightborn, and the “walking body horror” in the Crawler. On top of that, there are three new Callings with, the Arist, the Demagogue (for you cult builder types) and the Protector.
On top of that there are expanded rules to recruit hirelings to join your sessions as well as pets, guns, drugs, artefacts and more. For Game Masters, there’s a “sopping bucketload” of unsettling and horrifying events for each Domain in the Heart, new adversaries and adventures, as well as dozens of Bounties, which are self-contained one-page jobs that can be plugged into any ongoing game to provide impetus for a one-shot game, or to just simply liven things up with the session.
There’s also the Delve Deck, a brand new tool that gives GMs a quick fire way of generating Delves for games. This deck of tarot-sized cards are divided up into the eight different Domains found in the Heart (Cursed, Desolate, Haven, Occult, Religion, Technology, Warren, and Wilds), with each card featuring a unique event.
Finally, to help make sense of it all, there’s Deranged Scrawlings Volume 1, an expansion booklet for the Heart GM Screen. This softback zine is crammed with tables and reference notes for GMs to cut up and slap on the screen to make their ultimate screen.
Once the campaign ends next month, PDF previews will be sent out to backers in December, with the final physical copies of Ways & Means being sent out April/May 2026.
