Anime to Watch If You Like Overpowered Protagonists

From classic characters like Devilman to a smiling Luffy reaching Gear Five in ONE PIECE or a serene Goku unlocking Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super , anime protagonists with extremely high power levels have been the fascination of many anime fans. As an anime fan, I admire the work of writers and manga artists capable of creating stories with these all-powerful characters and how they reached such significant heights. Which series featuring super-powered protagonists are the best anime to watch? There are a lot of possibilities out there, but we’ve narrowed it down to 10 recommendations. NOTE: This feature focuses on anime protagonists specifically, so although he is EXTREMELY POWERFUL, characters like our beloved Satoru Gojo are not on the list since he is not the protagonist of JUJUTSU KAISEN . But that doesn't make us love (and respect) him any less! I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince, so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability RELATED: What Makes Us Overpowered? A Deep Dive Into I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince and Lloyd’s Quest for Magic I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince, so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability originated as a series of light novels written by Kenkyo na Circle and illustrated by Meru. After being burned (literally) by the magic he loves, a talentless mage is reborn as the titular prince, leading to the kind of skill that one could only dream of. In seconds, Lloyd can memorize and mimic the most powerful spells from his enemy. This isn’t just for defense, but for offensive attacks as well. I was surprised to see how such a conventional character could become someone as powerful as little Lloyd, and I do mean little , since he’s still a child. The second season of 7th Prince is currently simulcasting on Crunchyroll, and while the story of the light novels is not yet complete (it's still being published), I am pretty sure that the imminent finale will leave us wanting more stories featuring one or more protagonists with immeasurable powers. 7th Prince is a great watch for fans of the isekai genre… assuming you still consider it isekai when the protagonist is reincarnated in the same world. Solo Leveling RELATED: Solo Leveling Season 2 Recap: Everything You Need to Know Solo Leveling ’s anime adaptation by A-1 Pictures has done an amazing job bringing the Korean manhwa by writer Chugong and artist DUBU of REDICE Studio to life. When I chatted with Yoshihiro Kanno (action director) about how they pulled off these amazing scenes, he explained that his experience on Naruto and Sword Art Online helped him reflect Jinwoo’s powers in high-speed fight sequences and stunning effects. You only need to watch a couple of episodes of Solo Leveling to realize that Sung Jinwoo is one of the most powerful characters who oozes aura wherever he goes, but that wasn’t how he started. In the beginning, Jinwoo is the weakest hunter in a world where humans with magical abilities must protect the human race from monsters with extraordinary powers. That changes when the System chooses our hero to "level up" the more he fights (yes, like a video game). Jinwoo's journey is full of amazing, jaw-dropping battles that make him stronger after each encounter. As if his raw power isn’t enough, he can also manipulate shadows to create armies out of his enemies, and even “talk” in the language of monsters. NOTE: The Yoshihiro Kanno interview is available in Spanish , as it was done at CCXP Mexico. You can also check out his appearance on The Anime Effect at CCXP Mexico, in English . That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime RELATED: How Well Do You Know the Demon Lords From That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime? That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is perhaps one of the most extraordinary franchises on the list due to the power the protagonist gains after being reincarnated as an "insignificant" slime. In the first episode alone, Rimuru Tempest is able to manipulate energy and analyze enemies, evolving on each adventure to do incredible things you wouldn’t expect out of a slime. Needless to say, being able to control space and time is a complete contrast to Rimuru’s previous life as a normal 37-year-old employee! The way Fuse wrote the original light novels showcases a narrative where, despite the almost omnipotent protagonist, the endearing nature of his allies and the constant challenge of numerous adversaries make for a fun, exciting adventure. Remember, there's a second movie coming in 2026 ! The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya RELATED: Can You Identify These Time Travel Anime by Their Timelines? Based on the light novel series written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito , The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya adapts the fun adventures of high school student Haruhi who, in an attempt to shake things up, decides to investigate paranormal events involving aliens, espers, time travelers, and other supernatural entities. This is the exact opposite of what her classmate, Kyon, wants, as he’s long since given up on having an extraordinary life. Unbeknownst to both of them, these supernatural entities are closer than they think. Also? Haruhi possesses all the powers of a god, so much so that she could warp reality on a whim… though she doesn’t know it yet. What starts out as an ordinary school life anime turns into something truly out of this world that’ll keep you glued to your seat. Overlord RELATED: How to Watch OVERLORD in Order The story of the powerful skeleton Ains Ooal Gown is quite extensive, and the original light novels by Kugane Maruyama aren't even finished yet! It all begins with Satoru Suzuki, an ordinary gamer who’s an expert in MMORPG video games. His isekai leap is tremendous, as he becomes the supreme being he created within the video game, Yggdrasil, and interacts with his loyal subjects (formerly NPCs in that same game). Ains is capable of using Necromancer magic and creating and controlling the undead. He also possesses undead class abilities such as the Aura of Despair and instant death negation. I could go on. Literally. Because Ains has an extensive arsenal of over 700 spells! What makes Overlord so interesting is that Ains is, in essence, a VILLAIN, but as new adventures develop, he slowly becomes a lovable protagonist who protects his allies and friends. MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES RELATED: Could You Become a Divine Visionary in MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES? Based on the manga by Hajime Komoto, the adventures of Mash Burnedead are so peculiar that it may be strange to see this anime on the list. Why? Because the protagonist, technically, has no magic powers in a world where magic is the most important thing. So, why do I have MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES here then? Well, when Mash is discovered by a society that eliminates "defective" people who lack magic, it turns out that the boy is physically powerful due to his rigorous training. His physical strength certainly feels like an overpowered superpower; after all, he constantly stands toe to toe with wizards and is so strong that he can fly in the air by constantly kicking his legs. Need I say more? Mob Psycho 100 RELATED: 10 Supernatural Anime That Highlight How Unique the Genre Is Honestly, you can take your pick between this and ONE’s other work One-Punch Man , depending on what kind of overpowered protagonist you’re looking for. In One-Punch Man , Saitama trained so hard that he can beat any opponent in one punch, leading to him being completely bored with such dull battles . Mob Psycho 100 jumps from superheroes to the supernatural, giving us a character so overpowered that he suppresses his emotions in fear of snapping. Shigeo Kageyama is not only a boy with extraordinary psychic powers feared by both humans and supernatural beings, but his humility and modesty make him very likable. Instead of wanting to use his godlike powers to rule the world or find the next big fight, he simply wants to lead a normal life! Mob’s psychic abilities are measured on a scale, increasing in percentage the more he uses them. What happens if he hits 100%? Or higher? Well, unlike some overpowered characters who are training to reach their full potential, Mob’s trying his best not to hit that mark because of the chaos that’ll be unleashed. But suppressing your emotions can only last for so long… INUYASHIKI LAST HERO INUYASHIKI LAST HERO is a serious seinen that centers on Inuyashiki Ichiro, a 58-year-old family man chosen by an alien entity to have his body modified to become an incredibly powerful, super robot with amazing stamina. That’s not all Inuyashiki can do. He’s capable of entering and exiting our atmosphere, emitting huge and destructive energy blasts, telekinesis, and he can even cure terminal illnesses! The big problem is that as he is gaining his powers, a young man named Hiro is gifted with the same ability, but he decides to use it for evil! Hiroya Oku's manga is short, and the anime series is only 11 episodes long, but I can assure you that not only will it keep you on the edge of your seat, but the life lessons and morals will leave you wondering for a long time if it would actually be a good idea to grant absolute power to someone in the real world. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. RELATED: Best Pink-Haired Anime Characters to Brighten Your Day Of all the protagonists on this list, Saiki Kusuo's case may be the strangest, but also one of the funniest. Saiki was born with absolute psychic powers that include teleportation, telekinesis, telepathy, and so much more. Saiki would rather stay under the radar, but it’s hard when his selfish parents ask for a luxury house, going so far as to blackmail him to make that possible. There’s also the time he’s asked to increase his telekinetic powers to overwhelm the “power of beauty” of Teruhashi Kokomo, the most beautiful girl in class. Basically, even if the high school boy tries to avoid using his powers, his parents, classmates, and friends are so unconventional that every single episode has plenty of absurd situations that will make you burst out laughing! It's a shame that the anime adaptation for The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. only consists of 24 episodes (in contrast to the 26 volumes of Shuichi Aso's manga), but its short story narrative is so good that you'll definitely want to come back to this anime to spend some quality time with this super-powered teenager. Sailor Moon / Sailor Moon Crystal RELATED: How to Watch Sailor Moon in Order You may not think it by looking at her, but Usagi Tsukino is one of the most powerful anime characters around. Such is the case with many magical girls out there, as demonstrated in Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal . Every season of Naoko Takeuchi’s masterpiece highlights the champion of love and justice’s ever-growing abilities. From Neo-Queen Serenity to Eternal Sailor Moon and Sailor Cosmos, this magical girl's powers are on another level that ranges from devastating physical attacks to… time travel?! We don't want to give away any spoilers, but trust me when I say that Sailor Moon could probably rewrite all of history with just a tap of her locket. Speaking of magical girls with the power of a god, I TOTALLY recommend to you Puella Magi Madoka Magica . You will enjoy it… and cry in the process.
