After over 50 years of roll calls, giant robot fights, and color-coded drama, the Super Sentai franchise has been placed on indefinite hiatus and has essentially come to an end. The series first kicked off back in 1975 with the premiere of Himitsu Sentai Gorenger , in which the five remaining members of EAGLE (The Earth Guard League) don colorful electric battle suits to combat a terrorist group known as the Black Cross Army. Since then, various Sentai have risen up throughout the years to defend the Earth from all sorts of evil and powerful threats. After decades of captivating stories and exciting adventures, the franchise came to an end in 2026 with Number One Sentai Gozyuger , a show that commemorated the 50th anniversary of Super Sentai . As a longtime fan of the franchise, it’s difficult for me to say goodbye to a series that has been a part of my life since before I knew what it really was. But if I’ve learned anything from watching Super Sentai for decades, it’s that the spirit of these heroes will always remain with me as I recall their courage and drive to help me move forward. Of course, the essence of Super Sentai remains alive and well in plenty of anime. If you’re already missing Super Sentai amidst its departure, here’s a list of anime to watch that tap into the same energy that Sentai has established for years. The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World may be a bit on the nose, but this unique isekai series wears all the common Sentai tropes and staples proudly on its sleeve. Togo Asagaki, aka Kizuna Red, the leader of the Sentai team Kizuna Five, gets transported to a fantasy world in the middle of a fight with the evil Breakup King. On his search for a way home, he encounters a witch named Yihdra Arvoln, who seeks to restore her family's reputation. Together, they form an ever-growing party as Kizuna Red continues his team-based quest to save the world, all while his traditional Sentai antics create all sorts of real-life conundrums for his new companions. Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers This sequel to the 1988 anime series, commonly known as Ronin Warriors in the West, takes plenty of cues from Sentai teams and theming. 35 years after the events of Samurai Troopers , the seal to the Demon Realm shatters once more. This allows hordes of demon soldiers to invade the human realm and terrorize its citizens. In response, a new generation of Samurai Troopers in training rises up to defend humanity from this new and evolved threat. However, the fight takes a turn when those who officially don the armor of the previous warriors come in the most unexpected ways. Not only is Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers currently streaming on Crunchyroll, but you can also catch the original Samurai Troopers as well. Magic Knight Rayearth Color-coded magical girls and epic mecha fights collide in Magic Knight Rayearth , a beloved anime series adapted from the classic manga by CLAMP. Three eighth-grade girls (headstrong Hikaru Shidou, hot-headed Umi Ryuuzaki, and the intelligent Fuu Hououji) each visit Tokyo Tower on individual school field trips. While there, they are inadvertently whisked away to the fantastical world of Cephiro. They soon find themselves tasked with rescuing Princess Emeraude from the evil high priest Zagato and restoring peace in this strange new land, all while finding a way to return home. Active Raid In the near future, police forces use a highly-advanced system known as ACTIVE (Armored Combined Tactical Intelligence Vanguard Elements) to handle especially dangerous cases. Agents are required to use ACTIVE mobile suits known as Will Wears to take on special threats. Active Raid centers on Public Mobile Assault Unit 8, an ACTIVE police force with a penchant for excessive collateral damage. Unit 8’s newest recruit, Asami Kazari, seeks to prove herself by cleaning up her new team’s reputation. Love After World Domination Love After World Domination is a satirical rom-com that feels like every Sentai fan’s shipfic come to life. Freezing Sentai Gelato 5 is a special team led by Red Gelato, aka Fudo Aikawa. They face off against the evil Secret Society Gekko, who seek to engulf the entire world in flame. However, Red Gelato accidentally catches feelings for Reaper Princess, one of Gekko’s most formidable soldiers. The two of them secretly start dating and falling in love, all while their individual factions continue to engage in typical Sentai-versus-evil battles in the background. SSSS.GRIDMAN SSSS.GRIDMAN is an understated gem from Studio Trigger that reimagines the classic tokusatsu series, Denkou Choujin Gridman . Though it’s more Ultraman -inspired in its nature, it still features all the themes and combining robot action that Sentai has championed for decades. In the city of Tsutsujidai, high school student Yuta Hibiki finds himself having lost all of his memories. To make matters worse, the city is plagued by kaiju that threaten to destroy everything around him. Yuta, alongside his new friends, meets the Hyper Agent Gridman in a retro computer who urges them to team up to fend off the kaiju threat. Using a variety of weapons, the newly-formed Gridman Alliance works together to defeat kaiju, unlock the secret behind their existence, and help Yuta recover his lost memories. SSSS.DYNAZENON When you’re done with GRIDMAN , you can check out the sequel series, SSSS.DYNAZENON , which takes place in the same universe and follows a new cast of characters. Typical high school student Yomogi Asanaka encounters Gauma, a mysterious man and self-proclaimed Kaiju User. Soon after, the city comes under attack by a kaiju controlled by a faction known as the Kaiju Eugenicists. Gauma then enlists Yomogi’s help, along with several other strangers, to help him co-pilot the giant robot Dynazenon to defeat them. From then on, this unlikely team must learn to work together to bring out Dynazenon’s full potential in the fight against a new enemy. Saint Seiya Having first debuted in the 1980s, this classic color-coded action series has been beloved throughout the years and continues to see adaptations and new iterations. Plus, the original opening song is still awesome! In Saint Seiya (or Knights of the Zodiac ), chosen warriors known as Saints wield Cloths, powerful sets of armor that draw power from the constellations. The Saints are tasked with defending the reincarnation of the goddess Athena as she protects Earth from those who seek to conquer it. Seiya, a new Saint and wielder of the Pegasus Cloth, uses his newfound “Cosmo” power to try to rescue his missing sister. His search brings him to the Galaxian Wars Tournament, where he is tasked with winning the competition in exchange for the aid of Saori Kido. Planet With As another unsung gem, Planet With is an intense and entertaining mecha series that any Sentai fan would enjoy. Having lost all his memories, a young boy named Soya Kuroi inexplicably lives with a perky maid named Ginko and a bizarre cat-like being referred to as Sensei. As he tries to recall his past, strange beasts appear above Japan and begin wreaking havoc. The only thing that can stop them is a mysterious group of seven known as Grand Paladin who pilot giant robots against this invasion. However, Soya joins the fight himself, albeit against Grand Paladin for unknown reasons. Samurai Flamenco Poking direct fun at Sentai and tokusatsu tropes, Samurai Flamenco features plenty of gags and in-jokes that any Sentai fan would pick up on. Despite having a career as a male model, Masayoshi Hazama still dreams of being a superhero like the ones he watched on TV. Although he has no real powers or access to hi-tech combat armor, he creates his own persona of “Samurai Flamenco” to fight crime. He soon makes a reputation for himself and catches the attention of police officer Hidenori Goto, but throughout his comedic vigilante antics, Samurai Flamenco and Officer Goto soon encounter actual supernatural villains who put Masayoshi’s dream to the test. Super Sentai may be gone for now, but the impact they left and the meaning they hold for countless fans around the world won’t soon be forgotten. And if at any point you miss them (and have somehow caught up on the past 50 years of shows), the anime on this list will most certainly tap into that same action and passion that Sentai has held throughout its run. NOTE: While Kamen Rider may not be Super Sentai , in the wider frame of tokusatsu, it’s an indispensable hallmark, so yes, here is your Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider recommendation.
