Director Mamoru Oshii's surreal film Angel's Egg is coming to cinemas around the world, with its new 4K restoration enchanting a new generation of viewers. To celebrate the film's return, Tokyo-based artist Ran Tondabayashi has created an "alternative visual" for the movie, featuring symbols and iconography from the story. Tondabayashi's bold art employs everything from collage to illustration, and she has been hailed over the past few years as an artist to watch. This poster marks her first alternative visual for a feature film. The ribbon, wrapping around the cracked egg in an attempt to protect it, symbolizes the Girl at the center of the film. The Boy's eyes are visible in the bright red shadow cast by the egg. Angel's Egg was the first original OVA work written and directed by Mamoru Oshii ( Ghost in The Shell ) and also his first original collaboration work with internationally acclaimed illustrator Yoshitaka Amano. The 71-minute OVA released from Tokuma Shoten in Japan on December 15, 1985, and also received a limited theatrical run. The anime's 4K restoration version is produced to commemorate its 40th anniversary. The version's world premiere was held at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 in its "Cinéma de la Plage" section on May 20. In Japan, the 4K version was released exclusively in Dolby Cinema theaters first starting November 14, and will follow in theaters nationwide from November 21. GKIDS is also screening the 4K version in North American theaters. The synopsis from GKIDS reads: In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. At first, it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two. Forty years after the film’s original release, GKIDS is proud to present an all-new 4K restoration of the film, supervised by director Mamoru Oshii, in cinemas nationwide for the very first time. The film is a creative collaboration between acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), who wrote and directed the feature, and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theolog with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy.
