‘Afterlife with Archie’ Series in the Works at Disney+ from ‘Riverdale’ and Comic Creators

A TV series adaptation of comic series Afterlife with Archie is officially in the works from the comics’ creators and “Riverdale” team.

The project, based on the comic book of the same name by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, has received a script-to-series commitment at Disney+, Deadline reports today.

The the one-hour series adaptation “re-imagines the beloved town of Riverdale as an apocalyptic, nightmare-fueled hellscape overrun with flesh-eating zombies.”

Betty, Jughead, Veronica, Archie, and even Josie and the Pussycats have to deal with gore, violence, dark magic, Cthulhu, and zombie brutality. Or at least they do in the comic book, which launched in October 2013. None of the characters are safe in the source material, which should make for a fun, dark series adaptation.

Aguirre-Sacasa is writing and executive producing. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce on behalf of Berlanti Productions.

Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti previously collaborated on the series “Riverdale,” which gave a Twin Peaks-like spin on the classic Archie comics. Aguirre-Sacasa also serves as chief creative officer for Archie Comics and is the co-creator, with Robert Hack, of the comics Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which was developed into a Netflix series that ran for two seasons.

Berlanti also has the upcoming Scooby-Doo! live action series at Netflix.

Stay tuned for more on “Afterlife with Archie” as it arrives.
