GOG has added another cult favorite to its GOG Preservation Program in Ubisoft and Darkworks’ 2005 survival horror title, Cold Fear. As with the original Resident Evil trilogy last year, this new version of the game allows players on modern PCs to finally experience the game it as intended, along with “a host of technical improvements and quality-of-life upgrades.”
The game has been brought up to modern standards with full support for Windows 10 and 11, native widescreen, resolutions up to 4K with high refresh rates, and reliable performance on both dedicated and integrated graphics. In addition, some localization options that were previously unavailable on PC have now been restored, allowing the game to be played in multiple languages.
This new release also modernizes how Cold Fear feels to play, including controller support for popular gamepads, unified button layouts, and full support for wireless play, hotplugging, D-Pads, triggers, and vibration, all based on an updated scheme inspired by the original PlayStation 2 version’s controls.
That’s on top of multiple long-standing issues have been fixed for the PC version, including crashes, visual glitches, and broken options have all been resolved to allow a smoother, more stable experience.

If you’ve never played Cold Fear, the game sees you take on the role of Tom Hansen, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard whose crew receives a mysterious order to undertake a hazardous rescue mission in the midst of a winter storm. As the waves surge higher, Tom and his crewmates find the vessel, an abandoned Russian whaling ship. Boarding the ship, they discover that the ship has only been abandoned by human life. Something else is on board, and soon Hansen is the only one left who can stop it.
