Check Out the Prototype for Feline Horror Adventure ‘Scratching Shadows’ [Teaser]

While it’s sadly classified as an “unfinished project” by indie dev team Chico Games, they’ve still decided to release their short but sweet feline horror adventure game, Scratching Shadows. Available for free on itch.io, this five minute game has players take on the role of a hungry cat wearing a small body camera, exploring an abandoned motel in search of food. As you wander around, you’ll also end up chasing a rat through the motel, which appears to have had something sinister going on.

As mentioned, this is unfortunately an unfinished project, but according to the team, Scratching Shadows was initially planned collaboration with publisher Critical Reflex (the folks who published Mouthwashing). While the overall project didn’t move forward, Chico Games decided to release the game in its current state for a “what might have been” for fans, wonky jumping and all.

“The original idea involved exploring different found-footage style games, each with its own concept, all contributing to a broader narrative with potential connections between them,” explains the devteam on the game’s itch.io page. “This was also our first attempt at aiming for a more realistic look and working with assets.”

It’s understandably a bummer that the project didn’t move beyond this prototype (they even put together a cool VHS mockup!), but that’s the way game development goes, sometimes. And hey, at least we got this instead of having the project disappear completely. Who knows? Perhaps with fans clamouring for more feline horror video games, it might spark another dev to give it a shot.

Thanks to AlphaBetaGamer for spotting this!
