On December 26, 2004, a massive underwater earthquake off the coast of Sumatra sent a devastating tsunami roaring through the surrounding coastline. Hundreds of thousands were swept up in waves reaching 30 feet high that rapidly spread across fourteen countries. Many of the victims were tourists vacationing at seaside resorts, including María Belón and her family who were spending Christmas in Khao Lak, Thailand. The first wave struck while Maria, her husband Enrique, and their three sons were playing by the pool, instantly transforming their holiday vacation into a hellish ordeal.
J.A. Bayona’s 2012 film, The Impossible, chronicles their unbelievable story of survival alongside an unflinching look at the devastation and chaos that resulted from these massive waves. In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction podcast, Jenn and Joe revisit this upsetting natural disaster and the unlikely heroes that rose in its wake.
