In the mood for some classic sidescrolling action with a little mix of demonic possession? Devolver Digital and developer Heart Machine (the folks behind Hyper Light Drifter) have just what you need with Possessor(s), which is out now on PC via Steam and PlayStation 5. Inspired by platform fighters, Possessor(s) marks a new entry into the genre the devteam refers to as “Search Action”.
In Possessor(s), you play as Luca, a high-schooler trapped in the ruins of Sanzu City – a sprawling metropolis overrun with otherworldly horrors following an interdimensional catastrophe. Her body broken, Luca strikes a deal with Rhem, a newly freed demon in need of a host. Together, they make a last-ditch effort to survive.
Gameplay is centered around tight, fast-paced platforming with a range of unique movement abilities that extend to the combat. You’ll need to balance ground and air attacks, combos and juggles as you encounter a variety of foes and bosses. As is the case for the Metroidvania genre, you’ll be able to find and unlock a wide array of weapons and upgrades to bolster your arsenal and explore previously inaccessible areas.
Hauntingly beautiful 3D environments form a backdrop over which hand-drawn and animated characters, and the game’s sci-fi horror action take center stage. Players will choose from multiple paths in an open-ended world structure as you look to uncover the truth behind the catastrophe. Along the way, you’ll encounter a cast of engaging characters, each with their own heart-breaking story to follow in the aftermath of the devastation.
