Cancelled Famicom ‘Splatterhouse’ RPG ‘Splatterworld’ Has Been Discovered

A few weeks back, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System with a list of obscure horror titles, one of which was Namco’s Japan-only spin-off, Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti. It turns out that the game originally had a sequel in the works in the form of an RPG named Splatterworld. Unfortunately, the game, which was intended to launch in March of 1993, was cancelled, relegated to promotional materials. Until now.

Per the Splatterhouse fan site West Mansion, a nearly-complete version of Splatterworld was recently discovered, dumped from its cartridge and the ROM uploaded to 4chan. According to the fan site, the game is playable with an emulator, though it remains untranslated.

From bits and pieces of info from the promotional materials, Splatterworld sees Rick and Jennifer return to face Dr. West, who is the main villain. Jennifer was to be a member of your party, as were two new characters seen in the few pieces of artwork shown in an episode of the Namco Museum of Art about the Splatterhouse franchise: Greddy, a wandering guitarist who has a thing for Freddy Krueger cosplay, and Melton, a “muddy naked man with a strong impact.”

One of the interesting features of the game is if one of your party dies in battle, they’ll be resurrected as a zombie, but would only be able to do some basic actions until they are fully restored. Another mechanic is what’s known as “Channelling”, where the player is able to summon the souls of previously-defeated foes for them to “possess” the summoner in order to perform a special attack.

Huge thanks to Time Extension and West Mansion for the info! And check out the promotional video below featuring Splatterworld.
