‘Painkiller’ Dishes Out Punishment Now on PC and Consoles [Trailer]

The Steam Next Fest demo is gone, but that’s because 3D Realms and Anshar Studios’ Painkiller has launched today on PlayStation 5Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. This reimagining stays true to the franchise’s origins with fast-paced action, brutal enemies, diverse weapons of punishment, and towering gothic environments, all while pushing the series forward in bold ways with a frenetic campaign designed for co-op multiplayer, and a new roguelike game mode.

Much like in the original 2004 game by People Can Fly, the 2025 version of Painkiller sees you trapped in Purgatory, sentenced for your transgressions against Heaven. But the Voice of the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself. As one of the Champions, you are to stop the fallen angel Azazel who is about to unleash his demonic armies onto Earth. You will face hordes of enemies, demons with unique powers and three monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim.

Blast through hordes of demons in brutal, fast-paced combat with an array of familiar and new weapons that can be upgraded and customized in multiple ways, with devastating results. Take the battle across gruesome gothic levels to stop the fallen angel Azazel’s invasion of Earth and earn your salvation – solo or in online co-op for up to three players. And if that’s not enough, there’s also the Rogue Angel mode, which takes players to a new realm of Purgatory, where you and your friends will advance through procedurally generated arenas, collect tarot cards, weapons, and items along the way, and take on epic bosses.

The Standard Edition of Painkiller is available today for $39.99. Players can also grab the Deluxe Edition for $49.99, which includes the base game plus the Season Pass featuring three additional post-launch DLCs, each including six weapon skins and four character skins.
