‘Cliffhanger’ – Director Jaume Collet-Serra’s Survival Thriller Remake Releasing in Summer 2026

Over thirty years later, the Sylvester Stallone action thriller Cliffhanger is getting a reboot, with Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, The Shallows, Carry-On) directing a fresh take on the material that’s being described as more of a grounded survival thriller than an action-adventure picture. The film will release nationwide in theaters on August 28, 2026.

The Playlist reports, “Cliffhanger reimagines the 1993 classic as a modern survival thriller. The film stars Pierce Brosnan as veteran mountaineer Ray Cooper and Lily James as his daughter Naomi, who must outwit kidnappers amid the treacherous peaks of the Dolomites.”

The script was written by Ana Lily Amirpour, Sasha Penn, Mark Bianculli, and Melanie Toast. Amirpour (The Bad Batch), you may recall, had previously been attached to direct a female-fronted Cliffhanger reboot, but that project went through many changes these past several years. Before it became a Jaume Collet-Serra project, Ric Roman Waugh (Greenland) took over as director and the film morphed into a legacy sequel starring Sylvester Stallone. It’s now back to being a reboot of the property without Stallone’s involvement.

“Collet-Serra’s version blends the genre intensity of The Shallows with the emotional stakes of The Grey, promising a grounded, vertigo-inducing spectacle anchored by human vulnerability rather than pyrotechnic excess,” The Playlist’s report also notes this afternoon.

Row K Entertainment will be releasing the new Cliffhanger movie in theaters.
