Thibault Emin makes his feature directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Alice Butaud and Emma Sandona, based on Emin’s 2007 short film of the same name.
In Else, “A romance blossoms between an introvert and a confident woman, but their relationship faces a threat when a strange epidemic causes the infected to merge with their surroundings, trapping the couple in a shapeshifting nightmare.”
Matthieu Sampeur, Edith Proust, and Lika Minamoto star.
Joe Lipsett wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting out of TIFF last year, “The body horror is often horrifying, but when filtered through the romanticism of Else’s central love story, the visuals lend the film a grandeur that is intimate, poetic, and tragic.”
“In Else, the monster is many things: a world-ending virus; a mutated creature lurking in the shadows; a risky escape without guarantee. In the end, however, the film suggests that the biggest threat to human experience, and to Anx and Cass specifically, is a life without love,” Joe’s review continues. “There’s a real poetry in that.”
