We Dive into the Two New Special Features in the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ 4K Collection

“I think Mr. Krueger is still adored after all these years because it’s a simple hook, a simple gimmick that Wes Craven came up with all those years ago.”

Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund waxes poetic about his work on the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in the new 4K Ultra HD set, which includes 4K restorations of all seven original films.

Two new extras, “Boiler Room Confessional” and “Freddy’s Footnotes,” are included. Totaling a combined 15 minutes, they feature Englund along with A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors director/co-writer Chuck Russell, and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare cinematographer Mark Irwin.

“Boiler Room Confessional” mostly centers on Englund, who touches on the origins and legacy of Freddy Krueger. He discusses drawing inspiration from Klaus Kinski‘s portrayal of the titular vampire in 1979’s Nosferatu the Vampyre while channeling his indignation after witnessing his young co-stars get pampered while he was stuck in the makeup chair for hours on end.

Russell praises “Robert’s timing, his interaction with the cast, and his conviction.” Sholder adds, “There’s something about him that he emanates this power and he radiates this strength and menace. He’s a superb actor.”

“Freddy’s Footnotes” gives the filmmakers more of the spotlight, discussing their biggest challenges — from Freddy coming through Jesse in Freddy’s Revenge to the snake creature in Dream Warriors to the freeway sequence in New Nightmare — along with their favorite kills and scenes from their respective movies.

While more in-depth individual interviews (or, better yet, audio commentaries) would have been preferred over desultory featurettes, the truth is we’d purchase this set regardless of whether anything new was included. Despite the brevity, each participant shares interesting anecdotes about their time on Elm Street.

The real selling point of the set is, of course, the movies themselves and the new restorations are absolutely dreamy. You also get the unrated cuts of the original Elm Street and The Dream Child, the alternate 3D ending of Freddy’s Dead with 3D glasses, and dozens of archival special features.

A Nightmare on Elm Street: 7-Film Collection is now available on 4K UHD.
