‘Wolfenstein 3D’ Tribute ‘Darkenstein 3D’ Comes to Steam for Free on October 21 [Trailer]

With MachineGames giving fans hope for a third Wolfenstein entry, MicroProse is doing the next best thing with solo developer Rowye‘s Darkenstein 3D, a self-described love letter to Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Best of all, you’ll be able to enjoy the game for free when it launches on October 21 on Steam.

Built as both a tribute and an evolution of classic FPS shooters from the 90s, Darkenstein 3D blends pure old-school skill-based combat with modern twists in physics, gore, and environmental chaos. You play as the Hobo Guy: a furious American drifter lost in enemy territory, armed with nothing but a shotgun and pure vengeance. Gunther, your loyal dog companion, was taken during a Nazi raid. Now he’s locked away deep inside enemy fortresses. It’s time to bust him out and get revenge.

There’s no cover, no aim assist, and no handholding to be found here. Just movement, aim, and survival. Dodge bullets, strafe through firefights, and master the deadly rhythm of retro combat. While you may not have Gunther, you’re still able to turn the battlefield into chaos with your vicious rat sidekick. Distract enemies, combo with grenades, and create absolute carnage across 13 different stages, ranging from castles, caves, valleys, and desert towns.

“I spent years immersed in games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory, making maps for the latter as well as Quake 3. Darkenstein 3D is my way of bringing that same fast, chaotic energy back. It is a raw shooter that lives between the first FPS classics like Doom and Wolfenstein 3D and the modern era. Louder, bloodier, silly, and built to be played hard,” says Darkenstein 3D creator Rowye.
