Not one to let Capcom have all the fun today, Koei Tecmo had a surprise for Fatal Frame fans at today’s Nintendo Direct. 2003’s Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is getting the remake treatment, and will arrive for the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam in “early 2026”.
If you haven’t played the original on the PlayStation 2, the story for Crimson Butterfly centers around twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura. While visiting a forested valley in the Minakami region where they used to play as children. Mayu is led away by a crimson butterfly, with Mio giving chase and the two ending up in Minakami Village, a legendary location said to trap people who enter it. as they are trapped in a ghost-filled village cursed by a failed ritual which they are being forced to re-enact.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake has undergone “a complete overhaul”, featuring improvements across the board from its visuals and audio to its gameplay and controls. Notably, the series’ signature Camera Obscura mechanic will now offer “richer and more engaging gameplay” in both exploration and combat.
In addition, the new “Holding Hands with Mayu” mechanic aims to add “a heartfelt touch” to the gameplay, emphasizing the bond between Mio and Mayu.
