Based on the manga by Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou, Gachiakuta is the story of Rudo, a boy from the slums of an idyllic floating city known as the Sphere. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit and tossed into the rancid garbage pit far below the Sphere, Rudo will do whatever it takes to survive in the hellish depths so he can take revenge on the people who sent him there. Zanka and Riyo bid Rudo farewell for now as they all enter the lobby. Semiu, the receptionist, sits at a large desk just inside. Enjin introduces her to Rudo, and she stares at him for a moment. She suddenly stabs a fork in his direction, killing two flies that had been circling his head. She puts two fingers to her glasses, which begin to glow — they’re her vital instrument and give her the ability to see what a person’s really made of. She looks at Rudo and gasps. She tells them that he still needs training in using his power. The two turn to leave, and Enjin glances back at Semiu, unconvinced that she’d shared everything that she’d seen. The Rundown As Enjin and Rudo walk to the boss’ office, the Cleaner fills in the newcomer on the operation. There are about 100 Cleaners, Enjin says, including their support staff. Before they open the door to the office, Enjin tells Rudo that no one knows what the boss’ vital instrument is and Givers rarely give out that information in general. The boy slowly opens the door to find an empty office. The boss is away on business and it may be a while before he returns. Riyo pokes her head out from around the corner and suggests Rudo watch her work while they wait. RELATED: Gachiakuta Anime to Air for Two Consecutive Cours Semiu gives them the details on the job. A town near a polluted zone requested a cleaning after spotting small trash beasts near their barricade. The Ground is made of safe zones, Semiu explains, and polluted zones, where the trash beasts live. When Rudo fell to the Ground, he landed in one of the largest polluted zones. Masks are required in these particularly dangerous and toxic areas, known as No Man’s Lands, so it was lucky that Enjin found Rudo when he did. Tag Along Rudo arrives at the job site with Riyo, along with Supporters Gris, Follo, and Tomme. Supporters can’t use vital instruments, but they train hard to assist the Givers with trash beasts. Riyo reassures the new trainee that this will be an easy job. She gives him a wink, flustering him. Rudo gets lost in thought about the Ground, but rather than viewing the trash as an eyesore, he sees it as a treasure trove. He’d love to fix some of it up. RELATED: Gachiakuta Anime Goes Hard in Creditless Opening, Ending Videos Gris takes a moment to introduce himself (with a very firm handshake), and Riyo says he’s saved Givers’ lives before. Rudo resolves to watch carefully and learn. Suddenly, a herd of trash beasts emerges from the brambles, but Riyo isn’t bothered — not even when they start ramming the barricade. She remains unruffled even as slightly larger trash beasts appear next. Rudo is panicking a little, but the veteran Cleaner stays calm. She suggests a welcome party when they get back and asks the boy about his favorite foods. With another wink, Riyo tells Rudo that on the Ground it’s important to always keep your cool if you want to survive. He takes this advice to heart just as a massive trash beast bursts through the barricade. Keep Your Cool This one won’t be easy, but Riyo’s excited to take it on. She activates her vital instrument, a pair of scissors known as the Ripper, and goes to work. She takes out the smaller trash beasts first as the formidable Supporters disable them and send them her way. A beast lunges at Follo, and Rudo instinctively activates a metal pipe as a vital instrument to defend him. He still can’t control it, but it buys enough time for Riyo to finish the beast off. She decides to simply dice it up. Riyo starts with the tubes on its head, where she notices a strange glowing spot. Enraged, the beast unleashes an attack that knocks Rudo off his feet. As he falls, he realizes just how much he needs to learn. Gris catches his wrist before he plummets into the chasm the beast created. Riyo pierces through the beast’s head with the Ripper, destroying it. She picks up the object it left behind, the same one that she’d seen glowing: a vital instrument, something they’ve never seen on a trash beast before. Elsewhere, one of the men who kidnapped Rudo earlier opens his eyes. He’s in a dark, unfamiliar room, and a man sits nearby. He coldly asks where the Sphereite has gone. Who’s looking for Rudo?
